A Republican congressman said, “I don’t think she knew Murtha served in the Marines.” Obviously, the fact that Rep. Murtha had a long and distinguished career in the Marines makes her statement outrageous, but why should it matter? What I find offensive is the (implied) idea that only those who have served in the military have a right to express an opinion on the war. Earlier in this country’s history, the many more people served in the military, but now only a small fraction do. But we all have a right to have and express an opinion. And some of us think that the best way of “supporting the troops” is to bring them home quickly from this war, rather than quietly sitting back and letting the administration do whatever it wants. ---

I don’t know a thing about her district, but I hope her constituents see fit to show her the door. What impressed me more than anything else was the maniacal look on her face- reminded me of the scence from The Omen where Mrs. Blaylock attacks Ambassador Thorne. ---

Jean Schmidt was already making an ass of herself when she was running against Paul Hackett (a Marine and Iraq veteran) in a special election for Ohio’s 2nd District, so apparently she’s hit the ground running in the House. ---

Perhaps I’m reading into this, but when the Republicans backpedalled on Murtha (Cheney noted that Murtha was “a good man, a Marine, a patriot”) they seemed to give him more respect than a mere civilian would have gotten. It seems to me that all Americans should be be able to have opinions on the war, regardless of our military background. ---
