Well, you could try burning an updated XP install CD. This would let you run the repair console and do whole bunch of other cool stuff, as well.
The process is called “slipstreaming” and there are all sorts of web tutorials on the subject. This web site has lots of guides and it looks pretty comprehensive.
The end result will be a customized, up-to-date and unattended XPSP2 install disc complete with all service packs and patches. If you wanted to, you could even include the drivers for your own specific hardware.
I highly suggest slipstreaming a XP SP2 disk if you don’t already have one. I reinstalled WinXP so often from my XP SP1 upgrade disk that I got the free SP2 CD from Microsoft to save myself from having to download the SP2 patch over and over again. I finally slipstreamed it in and while there are still a lot of later patches that have to be installed, the SP2 disk makes life a lot easier.
Okay, I got a new hard drive and now I’m stuck. I disconnected the old one and put the new one in and attempted to install my upgrade version of Windows XP. When I got to the point that told me to put in one of my earlier editions of Windows, I put in disc 1 of my Windows ME Restoration discs and I got a message saying it was invalid and to insert another disc. I then tried using disc 2 and disc 3 and got the same message. Now what?
