Why? As some sort of honorific?
What, like Republicans don’t vote the party line?
If the DFL puts up a valid candidate, good Democrats will vote Democratic. If the DFL puts up a stupid (peanut, peanut butter…SKIPPY!) candidate, good Democrats will vote Democratic. Good Republicans will vote Republican no matter who the DFL puts forth.
As always, it’s the swing voters who will make the difference. And there are enough idiots out there who will see ‘Wellstone! Yeah, I’ve heard of him!’ and check that box. For reference, see a dead guy beating Ashcroft in Missouri.
Yes, it would be partially as an honorific, but also just out of default. I’m not going to vote republican, the control of the senate hangs in the balance.
It may be a moot point anyway. The dems are probably going to find a quick substitute.
Well, regardless of who the DFL comes up with, and regardless of who wins (dem or rep), I think the state will be better represented.
I’ll grant that Senator Wellstone was a devoted campaigner/staunch democrat/voted his conscience, etc., but I think it says something that his “conscience” was the least original, most party-line, anti-business, get-into-your-billfold voice in the Senate.
Rather than sponsoring legislation to get companies that moved their headquarters off-shore banned from doing business with the government, I think it would’ve made more sense to adjust the tax structure so that the companies wouldn’t’ve wanted to move off shore.
But that was his way of thinking all along: I know better what to do with your money than you do. Gimme.
Over the top and around the bend liberalism like his has already led this state to be called Mommysota. Maybe his death will begin the rebound to some semblance of adult leadership rather than the paternalism he espoused so vociferously.
Red McCombs?
That is, somebody mentioned the Vikings and that got me wondering if a Texan could be appointed for the two month lame duck period.
Don’t know how popular he is up there, though?
I think you should open a Pit thread.
There is already a Pit thread. Also threads in IMHO and MPSIMS. The Pit thread is an inappropriately placed condolence/mourning thread wherein anyone voicing anything less than Wellstone idolatry are eviscerated.
So, I said what I said here as it regards what I think the effect of any Wellstone replacement would be.
On a related note…the name I’m hearing most now is Walter Mondale.
