# Replacing window AC units with another cooling system in an older home

With the recent bump of this thread, I did look at that (now reopened) EPA site for window vs central air efficiency and could not find it in any useful comparison sense between window and central.

Other sites (that did not try to also sell central air installs) sore of came up with if you install 3 or more window units a central a/c starts to become more cost efficient to run. So in my case the numbers are true, one large window unit that cooled the entire ‘day time’ living area (open concept, about 1/2 the house), and a bedroom A/C unit or 2 for night time use is more efficient then central. And again my electric bills verify this ($135/year central to $85/year window).

Some of the sites mentioned about the humidity and the ability of central a/c to run at partial speed to increase comfort. So that is a factor. But it appears that if a home’s main living area can be services by one or two window units running at the same time it can be more cost effective then central a/c.
