Yep, Chicagoan here. My alderperson’s office literally had to cut off donations intended for the recent arrivals within days because they ran out of space to store them. As a rule, Chicago welcomes immigrants. ---

I think they could be, but are they legally allowed to work while their cases are pending? If so, then there’s a whole lot that needs to be done. If not, then they are by definition going to need to be using services, and chances are, they will end up being deported and the communities that supported them will not get the benefit of their work. Now, my point in that is not to say that immigrants don’t have value, but that our pretty stupidly designed immigration system certainly does its best to eliminate that. ---

Many are asylum seekers and are going through the years-long process of pursuing this in the courts (which is entirely legal and proper). In the meantime, yes, they’re allowed to work here. I want to believe you, because that’s how it _should_ be, but everything I look at says that they have to wait at least 365 days from when they apply for asylum before they can apply for a work permit. (Also in my research, I found that it used to be 150 days until it was increased to 365 under Trump.) That’s not to say that they couldn’t be working under the table, but that’s a whole different story. ---
