Interesting discussion on the PBS News Hour. According to Amy Walter (the kinder, gentler Rachael Maddow), independents who sent Obama to the WH, said: We’re fed up with Bush and the way Washington works, we want to send you to to change things. But if turn out as politics as usual, we’re gone.

The last presidential election where the winner even implicitly promised something other than politics as usual, **and** came anywhere close even to making a noticeable effort to keep that promise afterwards, was . . . 1976. And the people didn’t much like the results.
