The ironic thing about some folks reacting against Obama purely on racial grounds is that fact that he is largely a product of white American culture - he was raised by his white mother and grandparents. (And even if his father had been more involved in Obama’s upbringing, the guy was an African, not an African-American, and presumably free of the cultural baggage - for want of a better term - carried by many American blacks.)
About 10 % of people are left handed. About ten percent are gay. Kinda handy god made it so easy to pick them out.
What is the debate with this thread? Whether Republicans are racists? Some are and some aren’t, just like with Democrats.
But the thread title assumes that all Republicans are “racists” and that we are “losing our mind” because a black man, who we obviously use a racial slur to refer to, is about to become President.
I am a registered Republican, and I am 95% sure I am in fact voting for Obama.
The thread title was not meant to start an intelligent debate; it was meant as an insult. It is clearly Pit material, although I thought that racism wasn’t even allowed in the Pit.
I remember a posting a while back about how the poster felt that realtors would steer minorities away from white neighborhoods, and received an official warning for it, and was then told that such insults against groups, like realtors, were not even allowed in the Pit.
I hate to say it, but this is one awful thread. The thread title is better suited to the Pit than GD; it’d hard to get a meaningful debate going in here as it is.
I think there is indeed GOP desperation, and understandably so. McCain is way behind. I do wish McCain would more consistent in trying to show honor towards his opponent. It’s sad that so many Republicans are willing to look the other way while a small contingent makes them look like a bunch of raving, borderline-racist wackos.
Small, and growing, or at least increasingly vocal as the days go by. But your point is well taken.
Is this a serious comment? It seems very foolish to call any American politician a Marxist if you know real Marxism in its actual horrible reality.
Does Astro still live on the Eastern Shore of MD, or am I confusing him with someone else?
The reason I ask is because the inland towns of the Eastern Shore are a special case, kind of a Mississippi Delta by the sea. I grew up in MD, south of DC, and I know that the Eastern Shore held on to segregation much longer than the rest of MD. My best friend from high school was always shocked at how much his dorm mates at Towson State talked about “niggers”. They were obsessed in a way that my friend couldn’t really understand.
This is ridiculous.
Seriously, at this point, McCain is advocating more profound socialism (government buying bad mortgages) by far than Obama is.
Calling Obama a Marxist makes about as much sense as calling him an Arab.
True.
And given that Stanley Ann Dunham’s ancestors date back to the colonial period in the Mid Atlantic, a lot of these folks calling Obama a nigger are distant blood relatives of his.
I took the thread title to mean “Some Republicans…” not “All Republicans…”
My mom just reported to me today that one of my aunts said this about Obama: “He ought to be taken out and shot.”
Yes, by all means, let’s talk about The Rage.
Ya know something? When the entertainers and such that Michelle spit Malkin cites in her little article do this AT AN OBAMA RALLY WHILE BEING STOKED UP BY THE CANDIDATE then you can talk about “The Rage”, okay? What Malkin talks about is fundamentally different from what we’re talking about.
And yes, I commend McCain for finally realizing just what he’s doing and correcting that woman at the rally the other day. Good on him. But the fact that the campaign went there at all, that he went down that path without foreseeing where it was going to go, means to me that he doesn’t have the judgment or the foresight to be the president of this country. And god forbid that SHE should ever have to step up.
This is the thing here…I don’t have such an antipathy toward the McCain candidacy because he’s a Republican. Yes, Republicans have been, in my opinion, anywhere from wrong-headed to evil in the last decade or so (depending on the particular Republican). But IF my political sympathies were more rightward, I would consider voting for McCain. It’s not the politics entirely. It’s the way the campaign has been run. As they dip ever downward in the polls, they play to the base more and more. It’s an unfortunate thing that the Republican base is what we’re seeing at these rallies. And it’s a fortunate thing that McCain cannot win with just the base on his side.
And please…MALKIN? The woman who stalked the little boy who spoke to Congress about S-CHIP and skulked around his family’s house peering into the windows? That one? Gah…it’s sad that you’re reduced to that.
I don’t believe you. Yes, the Republicans as a whole are racist, and homophobic for that matter. And I see no reason to think that it magically stops at the top just because the defenders of the Republicans assert it to be so. As if it was some law of physics that they couldn’t be, that it’s simply unthinkable.
But not nearly as many Democrats. They haven’t spent decades trying to pull the racists in. Claims like yours are pretty standard from the right I’ve noticed; declaring that the Democrats are just as bad as the Republicans, in denial of reality.
The thread title assumes no such thing. “The Republicans”, obviously refers to them as a whole, and not necessarily as every single individual. This is obvious; it’s the way people normally talk and claiming otherwise requires either self delusion or is an attempt to distort what the OP meant in order to divert the accusation.
Clothahump is a right winger, and the American Right is quite clueless about what Marxism actually is.
Funny you should mention this. I just finished nosing around the NEHGS web site (doing genealogy research for myself) and briefly looked at an item on Obama’s ancestry. Among his kin are good ol’ Robert E. Lee. (I also learned that Stanley Ann is the given name of Barach’s mother. Otherwise I’d be scratching my head at the above, as I suspect most folks are doing.)
Dopers know. This is Obama central.
Interesting. I didn’t know about the Robert E. Lee connection. Maybe the campaign could run a commercial with the General to allay some of the fears expressed by astro’s associates.
Read for context, dude.
Even if I had meant that stuff, Muslim isn’t a race. I’d merely be guilty of religious bigotry. That’s only the second-worst thing you can be guilty of in America.
St. Mary’s County and Calvert County, and - to a bit lesser extent - Charles County on the western side were not much, if any, better.
That’s a Jewish name, isn’t it? Like Shadrach?
A Christian black Muslim Jew!
True, but the the much closer connection to the BW area, in terms of highways and jobs, made the changes come faster on the near side of the bay.
Yes.
