This demonstrates the biggest reason why I’m glad I joined the Navy - I served with all kinds of people, and it forced me to get over the juvenile stance that people who disagreed with me were just divorced from reality, or stupid, or dishonest. No, it taught me that depending on their experiences, thoughtful and decent people can reach very different conclusions. It’s a shame that this juvenile belief is so widespread, though.
