I noticed recently that some posters have asked for their posting privileges to be suspended. But…why? (If the reasons are none of my business, then hey, no problems.) Wouldn’t it be simpler to just stop posting? ---

No reflection on those that request it, but more often than not they need a little mechanical help to keep themselves from firing off something in an inspired moment. “Stop me before I post again!” is not an idle threat and we are willing to work with folks that need it. For example, I just removed privileges from someone reading the board at work . . . his workplace has new restrictive rules on how they can use the Internet and he’s afraid he’ll mess up. For safety and his job’s sake, I was happy to give him what he needed. We’ve also had a few cases where people felt they were spending too much time and energy online and needed to wean themselves from the board for their own mental/emotional well-being. Not being able to post helped them do that. The guy that said “more addictive than caramel-covered crack” had it right. BTW, anyone that requests a voluntary removal of privileges can have them restored by simply sending an email to any SDMB administrator. your humble TubaDiva Administrator ---

I requested suspension from another message board a few months ago. I’d been having problems with some other members, and no longer felt comfortable posting there. So, asking to have my privileges formally removed was a way of letting them know, “hey, I’m leaving; I won’t be a problem anymore”. I wasn’t in trouble or anything, I just left voluntarily. Robin ---

I did the same thing as you. Some people kept insisting they would kill me with bricks to the head! This used to be an “in joke” here apparently, but I felt threatened a lot, since I post under my own name. They refused to let me quit, however, which was more maddening, since I could see the bricks would continue to come, and I didn’t like the implications of waiting for things to get out of control. So I just went away for a couple of weeks and they had moved on to someone else. Still stings, tho ---

I’ve got the opposite problem. I need a wakeup call to remind me to check this forum. The first time through I read every old Cecil link that looked interesting, then waited a couple of months for more to accumulate. Then a couple more. Now when I logged on, the menu page said “Hi Stranger, you haven’t been here for six months! was it something we said 😕” You need a “snooze button” on your alarm clock to bring people back every now and then. That [Classmates.com](http://Classmates.com) does that, and it’s a good thing because I forget it’s there, but there are more of my alums signing on every month or so. ---
