I had the unfortunate experiance of dealing with microsoft tech support when they decided my copy of office that I got free from the torturous new day event was stolen. After assuring them I actually got the copy from microsoft, not out of the back of a pickup truck at first saturday in dallas I get this email

> [@](#):
>
> Dear bdgr,
>
> Thank you for contacting Microsoft Windows Update Support. My name is Viola, and I am glad to work with you. For your reference, the case ID for this service request is xxxxxxxxxxx. You can contact me directly by sending an email to [xxxxxxxx@mssupport.microsoft.com](mailto:xxxxxxxx@mssupport.microsoft.com) with the case ID in the subject line.
>
> First, I would like to apologize for your support request being unexpectedly delayed. Please be assured you have successfully contacted the correct support team and I will be working with you to address your concerns as quickly as possible.
>
> From the problem description, I understand that a validation issue was encountered when trying to validate Windows Vista. Please feel free to let me know if I misunderstood.
>
> (snipped 18 pages of directions on how to use vista to report yourself for software piracy)

Well…I let her know she misunderstood…that it was office that having a problem

> Dear bdgr,
>
> Thank you for your response and update on the current situation.
>
> From your description, I understand that the message saying that the key is pirated number was encountered when trying to access templates online. I appreciate your time and efforts on the issue.
>
> I fully understand the inconvenience you have experienced. Please be assured that I will do my best to resolve the issue.
>
> Before moving on, I would like to explain that the product key [office key given me by microsoft] is not similar to the Windows Product Key:[vista key from the OEM DVD] collected online. Based on the current status, Microsoft has developed a tool to help our customers convert an invalid Product Key into a Genuine Product Key. We can visit the following link to run the Windows Product Key Update Tool:
> (snipped instructions on how to change the windows product key if that had been the problem somehow)

at this point I decided to try one last time to remove and re-install office. I did so and it wouldn’t activate because it said it had now been installed too many times. I gave up on email support and called them. After half an hour of explaining where I got the DVD i finally got them to give me a code to type in to make it work. I then emailed the tech back to explain it was now fixed.

I love the idea of online chat customer service. However, it is always fucking worthless. I am sure they are making the reps respond to about 10 different customers at once and the answers are completely irrelevant for this reason (they’re just choosing the closest predefined response they can figure, they’re not actually tracking the conversation).
