Resentment Politics

Which side is not cooperating for the betterment of the populace?

This wasn’t part of our homework review packet and you didn’t tell us this would be on the test.

This attitude is a major sore spot for me. When the Democrats got a mandate in 2008, with a majority in both houses and the presidency, what happened? Did they abolish capital and disband the military? No, they offered a Republican designed health care plan as the opening position. When Joe Biden ran the judicial committee, and Clarence Thomas was nominated, did he block it? No. When a credible accusation of sexual harassment came up, Biden bent over backwards to allow Republicans to attack the credibility of Anita Hill, but would not allow questions about the credibility of the witness for Thomas.
Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are about as center as two politicians can get. Yet, if you listen to right wing media they are socialists out to tear down society. The only acceptable compromise in this election to a lot of people on the right would be to reluctantly vote for Donald Trump instead of enthusiastically voting for him.

Was it a hard answer? I figured it was trivial to say “both”

Trick question. I knew it!

If all you can do is try and defend against some boogeyman of a statement I haven’t made then I think our conversation is pointless.

If instead you see it , rightly, that both sides will need to compromise, then let’s discuss that.

But my attitude hasn’t changed since well before Obama. The attitude of it being a sore spot is THE issue for those like you.

In order to move things along for the betterment of the populace, we all need to compromise.

Awesome.

Let’s come up with a healthcare plan that is even better than the ACA! And THEN replace it. Who’s in?

Let’s have a national plan to fight Crona Virus and support the states in that effort. Who’s in?

Let’s vote in the senate for another comprehensive economic stimulus bill to support small businesses and people who have suffered the worst due to job losses. Who’s in?

Let’s pass the John Lewis voting act. Who’s in?

Should I go on? I can. I trust I don’t need to.

Yeah, really. Let’s see the Right yielding for a change. Then we can talk about the blessings of mutual compromise.

Both. But when the leader of one side publicly announces that his only function is to deprive Obama of a second term, then you tell me who is being uncooperative? And it continues. When Mnuchin and Pelosi were negotiating a Covid relief package, McConnell told them not to bother; he would not allow it to be voted on.

Follow my postings, please.

I agreed with @Ulfrieda that those thoughts worked exactly up until the political process gets invoked. After that, it has been and may continue to be all about being as divisive as possible.

What about all of the bipartisan legislation that made it from the House, only to die on Mitch’s desk:

Is it – in any sense of the word – governing when you treat every possible thing that even has the vague imprimatur of the other party on it as if it were Merrick Garland’s nomination ?

Agreed, so what is to be done about it? If neither sides attempts then there will never be compromise. I guess I am too hopeful for my own good. If something really good for the entire populace comes out from one side or the other and it gets voted DOWN simply due to politics, then I hope those morons get voted the fuck right out.

Details, details. That devil is always in the details. The healthcare thing is pretty simple, show that it helps the majority ( a comfortable majority, getting 50% probably isnt good enough) of people and it will get passed. Currently one side sees that it changes their plans, costs more, or affects them negatively. The other side sees the benefit of it helping more total people (That isn’t good enough)

The Covid package, I can’t talk about simply because I don’t know what the discussion was like that prompted the "it won’t get voted on " comment.

Apropos of this thread … I’ll repeat myself:

Biden ran against what Trump did and did not do.

Trump ran against baseless accusations, caustic innuendo, ludicrous conspiracy theories, and fever dream threats of what Biden and Harris will surely do.

I’ve had Fox on all morning. I had hoped that they would take a momentary breath, but … coupled with the “steal the vote” anthem … Fox’s analysts and guests have truly doubled down on the “from whole cloth” fairy tales.

my bad, he was finalist; Clinton with southern accent was, who could talk policy without notes, compared to Ivy
League Bush who couldn’t even read cue cards

No, Clinton was a Rhodes scholar.

I’m pretty sure that’s what he was trying to say:

“My bad, he [Carter] was a finalist, [not a Rhodes Scholar]; Clinton [is who I thought of] who had a southern accent but could talk policy without notes, compared to Ivy League Bush who couldn’t even read cue cards”

Well @Babale if were just gonna edit stuff until it actually comports with reality . . . we gonna be here a while.

While that is true, Republican voters continue to support politicians (like McConnell) to lead an obstructionist agenda. So not all of the blame can be laid at the feet of the politicians. There is the matter of their enablers and the mandate they are given by them.

Correct, which is why I have said that the message isn’t getting across, OR the politics of the left isn’t including enough folks. Both can be tackled, IN HOUSE
