Reshuffling of lifetime topten movielist: Murnau's "Sunrise"

Hmm, Top Ten lists are always so tricky. I could just name 10 Kurosawa films and be done because he’s hands down my all-time favorite director. . . Here are 10 movies that I can watch over and over again.

  1. Seven Samurai (or Shichi nin no samurai if we’re being pedantic)

  2. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre

  3. All About Eve

  4. Children of Paradise (Les Enfants du Paradis)

  5. West Side Story

  6. The Women

  7. Amarcord

  8. http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0052311/combined"] Touch of Evil

  9. Frenzy

  10. Ikiru

Haven’t seen it in years.

I just finished my watching my new Sunrise DVD. I am simply stunned. That wa sone of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. Certainly nearing the top of my lifetime top ten.

“Murnau,” writes David Thomson, “had found a crucial American subject, the ordinary person’s dream of something more than fate has allowed, and the dread that goes with the dream.”

The division into thirds is simply in keeping with the idea of the film being a song. Verse, Chorus, Bridge, in that order.
