She _really_ [messed up](http://www.cnn.com/2004/LAW/07/09/courtney.love.ap/index.html) this time. She pissed off the judge by being late last time, imagine his reaction when they have to drag her skanky ass into court after failing to show up. This woman needs some serious help. ---

Oltmanns and Robert E. Emery, if you’re following along at home) A little background first, I suppose. Borderline, histrionic, and antisocial PDs are defined in the DSM-IV as Cluster B disorders (along with Narcissistic PD). People with these disorders have “dramatic, emotional, or erratic behavior, and all are associated with marked difficulty in sustaining interpersonal relationships.” Borderline PD involves instability in forming interpersonal relationships; intense anger; tantrums; physical assault; suicidal ideation, gestures, and self-mutiliating behavior. Many therapists choose psychotherapy to treat Boderline PD patients. One specific approach is called dialectical behavior therapy (DBT); through this approach, the patient learns to “balance apparently contradictory needs to accept things as they are (such as intense negative emotions) and to work toward changing patterns of thinking and behavior that contribute to the problems in the regultaion of emotions.” Cognitive behavioral techniques are also employed; this involves skill training, problem solving, and exposure to situations that might provoke extreme behavior. Sometimes psychotropic medications are prescribed, although different features of the disorder require different drugs–no one drug has been found to treat all the symptoms of the disorder. Antisocial PD is defined by a pattern of irresponsible behavior beginning in childhood years and continuing on through adulthood; extreme disregard for and violation of the rights of others; interpersonal conflict and physical assault. There isn’t really a form of treatment that is consistently effective for antisocial PD. Techniques originally developed for anger management and deviant sexual behavior are sometimes used, and psychological interventions directed at specific antisocial behaviors are sometimes used. Basically this disease is a pain in the ass to treat. 😉 Histrionic PD is characterized by attention-seeking behavior; vanity; constant need for approval; shallow emotions; inappropriate sexual/seductive/provacative behavior; exaggerated responses to situations. There is a strong overlap between borderline and histrionic PDs (actually, there is an overlap between all of the Cluster B disorders and PDs in general, making PDs very hard to diagnose). Now, my textbook doesn’t give any specific ideas regarding treatment of histrionic PD, so I’m going to go ahead and guess that it’s a combination of the treatments for borderline PD and antisocial PD. You’re right when you say she probably won’t seek treatment. PDs are typically ego-syntonic, meaning that the patient experiences little or no subjective distress as a result of the disorder. Many people with PDs are forced into treatment at the request of their family members/co-workers/friends, or as a result of experience with the criminal justice system. They view themselves unrealistically–they see that there is nothing wrong with their behavior; this makes self-report assessments unreliable. A lot of people with PDs don’t stay with the treatment plan, and will stop seeing a therapist after only a few weeks. Now, I don’t know if she really has these disorders. The diagnosis was just an exercise in recognizing the features of specific personality disorders. ---

The best part was when Courtney _fell over_, just completely toppled over like someone who has no motor control. If you watch the video closely you can see Madonna’s handler hovering and fluttering around, trying desperately to get her off the platform without causing (even more of) a scene. ---

From the NYC newspapers, apparently Love had a miscarriage and/or abortion on her 40th B-day. Poor doctor. I’ve heard other people confuse her with Courtney Cox. I think Ms. Cox-Arquette has grounds for a major libel lawsuit there. Love is just totally f\*cked up and apparently beyond help. ---

Courtney Love reminds me of the “Bill the Cat” character from **Bloom County** , esp. in its glorious first time around. Years ago, I had a couple of housemates who were definitely cast from the CL mold. I actually tend to run towards an ideological sympathy for such people, but that formalistic appreciation tends to break down after prolonged personal contact. Nothing like the irresponsible “Courtney-Love-type-of-housemate” experience to impress upon a person that he or she really is (for all of one’s bohemian, youthful self-delusions) hopelessly square, normal, bourgeois… As for “Skankiest Male (deceased division)” the award goes to… Charles Bukowski!
