Sporswriter? yes. But F&LOTCT72 is still, IMHO, an amazingly insightful piece of writing. And funnier than hell. We’ll miss you HST, not that you’d give a shit one way or the other. ---

Two weeks ago I went to Cleveland with some friends. We went to the Rock and Roll HoF. There was a big collage of stuff from Rolling Stone magazine. In it was a typed memo from Jann Werner accusing HST of taking some stuff from his house. The handwritten note from HST was great, I think it opened with Listen Pigfucker… What blew me away were the first few typed pages of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, with HST’s handwritten edits. I ran to get one of my friends to drag him over and go lookitlookitlookit! _sigh_ ---

I seem to recall that in his book (“Fear and loathing in Las Vegas”). Thompson and his friend destroyed a rental car, trashed their hotel room, and made complete asses out of themseleves. Again, I don’t know how much of this was fiction, but if the incidents he described were true, what qualifies him to be any judge of people? If I were an innkeeper, and somebody like Thompson came in and destryed my property, I’d have the bum locked up. Maybe its fun to smash bottles and throw grapefruit rinds around in a hotel room…but somebody has to clean the mess up. Somehow a 45 year old man behaving like a 12 year old isn’t funny, its stupid. ---

Having dealt with the demons and been to the depths myself, I understand the choice but still feel sadness. I felt this way years ago when Richard Brautigan left us. I have discovered new writers - I just finished _Dry_ by Augusten Burroughs, which blew me away - but the old standards will always be worth a few re-reads and a place of honor in ye olde bookcase. ---

I doubt he’d want to “rest in peace”… “party in perpetuity”, maybe. I’d bet he had some horrible terminal illness, and refused to fade in slow misery. ---
