You know, it’s really not a good idea for people to recommend restaurants based on their twenty-year-old memories.

Washington has a huge theater scene–not quite New York or Toronto, but far more than most cities. The Kennedy Center, with six theaters, is the leading arts center in Washington and one of the leaders in the the nation (but “The Producers” will be gone by October), and the Shakespeare Theatre (not the same as Folger Shakespeare Theater) under Michael Kahn has become one of the leading Shakespearian theaters outside of London (and they open “Macbeth” in a couple weeks). The Washington Opera, led by Placido Domingo, and the National Symphony Orchestra under Leonard Slatkin are also gems. Cirque du Soleil and the Big Apple Circus both will also be in town around then. Some links (keep in mind its a slow time now, but by October everything will be in full swing):

There’s 1789 in Georgetown, which is one of the most esteemed restaurants around.

You’re right, of course, but I was really interested to hear if any of my old-time favorites were still in business. Thanks for the update.

My wife and I are very fond of the Taberna del Alabardero but we haven’t been there in a few years, and its been through some changes. Washingtonian Magazine has a very good dining guide.

One more pitch for the Ethiopian restauraants (There are 5 or 6 of them in Adams-Morgan alone): It’s the one cuisine Washington does better than any other city in America. We might also be tops in Salvadorean food, but frankly, the best Pupusa in the world is just a friggin’ Pupusa.
