> One that was so well loved they actually re-opened a decade after it closed in the Indiana State Museum. LS Ayres was a big local department store and they had a tea room that was around for about 80 years or so. The store downtown closed sometime in the 90’s but people missed the tea room so much that the museum re-opened a replica using much of the original furniture, fixtures, and decorations and also using the original recipes.

How wonderful to hear! Trips to Indy with my mom and grandmother always included a visit to the Ayres tea room. I’ll definitely make a point of stopping at the museum the next time I’m back in the midwest.

Sorry about going back so far in the thread, but it finally came to me that the place was called Happy Joe’s. Looks like they are still around in some places.

Ah yes. There was one within walking distance of my high school.

Moving west, I have many fond memories of a pizza place called La Strega in West Hollywood - and an upscale sister, no brother place, Il Stregone. Western & Wilshire I believe.

There’s a fairly new Shakey’s in my town. I haven’t been there but I noticed when the chain came back, the ads emphasized the lunch buffet rather than the pizza.

Before that, I think the last time I went to a Shakey’s was when I was a student at the University of Washington. There was a restaurant in the U-District and remember going there at least once for the Monday all-you-can-eat pizza. I think what almost killed Shakey’s was, unlike its competitors, it didn’t have home delivery.
