Retro Remedies

I was blissfully unaware of this until recently, but there has been a revival of interest in an old-time remedy: turpentine.

Yes indeedy, spirits of turpentine, taken internally, bathed in or applied to the skin is said to do wonders to cleanse your body of nasty Candida and parasites. It also fixes joint pain, muscle pain, nerve pain, pain pain and congestion*, among other things.

Spoilsports point out that turpentine is pretty toxic stuff, though it has legit uses as an ingredient in paint thinner. As little as 15 ml of turpentine can kill a child when taken internally; 4-6 ounces is a lethal dose for adults. Yet there is at least one Facebook group for turpentine devotees. Enthusiasts follow the Dr. Jennifer Daniels turpentine protocol. Weirdly enough, Ms. Daniels has been identified as a (former) M.D. with degrees from two Ivy League schools who will not be named to spare them embarrassment.

*it’s an ingredient in Vicks’ Vapo-Rub, though the company lists it as an “inactive” ingredient.

Yeesh. Often what is sold as Turpentine isn’t.

This is bringing back very old memories of Pacquin cold cream, which I now see is still bring sold…
