Who is destroying someone else’s property? That’s a very silly analogy.
This isn’t like a vigilante mob going over to Spacey’s house and burning it down, then going on to burn down the houses of the writers, directors, producers, and other actors on House of Cards. It’s nothing like that. Nobody has an obligation to watch House of Cards. That’s not how this works. Somebody might have a legal obligation to show House of Cards on their channel, but that’s only if they specifically agreed to such an obligation. And that would be between their lawyers and Spacey’s lawyers. In no case would it obligate the viewing public to watch it.
Consider the sudden cancellation of the first season reboot of Roseanne, now known as The Connors. With the reboot of the reboot, the crew kept working, and the new members of the cast had a shot at polishing their resumes, etc. The producers and the cast, however, lost a season, and that potentially means a season lost to future syndication. The biggest loser of all (other than Roseanne) may be Sara Gilbert, who, I understand was possibly the main force behind getting the reboot on the air. OTOH, I think Ms. Gilbert was comfortable with the decision to let Roseanne go.
I also see that the original Roseanne is still being shown in syndication. That’s as it should be, because until it went off the rails, the show was a very well-done sticom about blue-collar America. TV needs all of that it can get.
A lot of people have talked about Netflix “pulling” house of cards, but I don’t think they did? I watched an episode of House of Cards a few days ago and as far as I know they’re all still available. Does anyone have a cite that Netflix pulled it?
I don’t think any of that is a strong argument against the basic analogy.
Here you’re talking about an illegal action, which my analogy didn’t contain so that’s completely off point.
Again partly the same problem here. The analogy didn’t contain any legal obligation. I wasn’t assuming a military action was either illegal or legally obligated and in any case legality is an inherently fuzzier concept in military actions.
Strange to respond to an analogy about military action with two legalistic points about civil situations.
The point is simply that if people not only ‘don’t watch House of Cards’, but lobby and agitate that the show be cancelled so other people can’t watch it, they are also essentially taking away property from people, other than Spacey, who earn their livelihood from the show, collateral damage: that’s the analogy. That doesn’t mean they absolutely should not agitate to have it cancelled. And arguably continuing for a season with a lame(r, not a great show to begin with IMO) excuse for a show without Spacey’s character was a compromise exactly in view of that consideration: not screwing people who made income from the show but were not Spacey.
The actual point, that it’s reasonable to consider the economic fall out to people who aren’t a direct target of a socio-politically driven boycott, probably should go without saying. IOW a better criticism of my point would have been that it was too obvious rather than ‘silly’.
It isn’t so much arguing by YouTube (though I hear what you say) as that given the man has not had an opportunity to defend himself, all we have now are examples of his talents as an actor & entertainer in the form of such video clips & films.
I happened upon that clip last night & thought when this thread started what a different world we inhabited before the present financially & physically dangerous scorched landscape of now, in which ‘outrage’ over trivialities seems to have suddenly evaporated & been replaced by real issues.
heres a question… one of the greatest pro wrestlers in the world addled by brain damage and guided by a depression so deep because his best friend in the world died decided his wife and kid and himself didn’t need to live in this world anymore and killed them both and himself
Is the WWE wrong for erasing 98 percent of his career from existence?
there still arguing about this almost 10-15 years later …
For those who didn’t click through, this is a clip of Spacey performing Mack the Knife. Which…huh?
People who have stated that Kevin Spacey couldn’t act his way out of a wet paper bag are thus refuted. As are people who have claimed that nobody ever performs Mack the Knife, people who argue that there are no videos on Youtube, and people who deny that anyone ever makes non sequitur links as citations for their arguments.
But nobody here–or anywhere else–is making those arguments, so I’m not clear on why this thread needed bumpin.
As for the idea that Spacey has not had an opportunity to defend himself, that’s manifestly untrue. Anyone can make their defense known, especially if they’re a multi-millionaire with access to the press. He’s done so plenty of times. He’s also defended himself against some charges in court.
Re; “I’m not clear why this thread needed bumpin” - from today’s British, Sun newspaper;
// Film star Kevin Spacey has spoken out for the first since being accused of sex assaults.
In a seven-minute video, the 60-year-old tells of his “bleak and horrible” time and his “painful” journey since he was accused by a string of men in 2017.

He was dropped from hit show House of Cards, replaced in a completed movie and has not performed since.
In the film for a German business conference, Spacey asks: “If I can’t act, who am I?”
This is not Facebook or some similar expression of hoi polloi.
If you feel the need to comment, please actually post some of your own thoughts. Simply posting links to a movie clips is discouraged, here. You may certainly support your thoughts with links to others, but do not simply post a link. (Your added expression does not really provide the sort of thoughtful commentary we wish to promote.)
They didn’t. The entire series is still on Netflix and, as far as I know, was never unavailable there. The DVDs are still readily available for purchase. I don’t know why people are saying that the show was “pulled.”
Netflix did fire Spacey from the show and he doesn’t appear in the sixth season, but that’s not really the same thing.
And what an assessment & what language! Do you not understand what he means by his “identity” ? ‘Pretending to be someone else’ is the definition of being an actor, that’s what they do , what they predicate, train & devote their professional lives to, something he has done exceptionally well rising to the top echelon of his profession only to now see it unfairly denied for no reason whatsoever which you can ascertain, or can you,? because no lawyers can, that is why all charges against him have been dropped.
Are you not ‘moderating’ a little outside of your remit?
For what it’s worth, I binged hastily through the American House of Cards about a week ago. I’d had been a regular watcher of the original broadcast up until about the time the Frank Underwood character was rendered comatose by an assassination attempt, at which point the utter ridiculousness of the ever-twisting plotlines just made me give up. I fast-forwarded through the final season and then just read the summary on wikipedia.
The Usual Suspects remains one of my favorite films.
Acting is a job. If you don’t have an identity outside your career, you’re fundamentally lacking as a human being. And that’s before taking into account the whole “sexual predator” thing. I’m supposed to what, feel sorry for him? Fuck him. Spacey’s lucky that the worst thing that’s happened is that he can’t get a job anymore. He should go die in a sewer.
I’m not moderating at all right now. This is my opinion as a poster.
Well, in my humble opinion, I think you should put your moderator’s hat back on, & the first thing you should do is moderate your language.
I’m sure Spacey has a very clear identity outside of his profession, but being an actor is what he is just like say, Roger Federer is a tennis player
Only second-class people bang on & on to the world about their ‘inner lives’.
Why do you call him a “shit” & would you dare say it to his face?
