RFK Jr Files to Run for President (Dropped Out on August 23, 2024)

It’s never too soon to talk about Dead Kennedys.

We can certainly hope that RFK’s political career is now dead, even while the rest of that mere life support system for a brain worm remains alive.

Speaking of dead Kennedy’s, at the rate they must be spinning, we could power the nation for the next century.

God help us if he ends up in the Cabinet:

Considering it’s a “I’ll gladly pay you Tuesday for an endorsement today” situation, made to a person who will have all the leverage and has a history of casting aside people who no longer provide any benefit to him no matter what past services they may have rendered, it’s a bit shocking they’d think he’d actually follow through with any promises.

Then again, that sort of tactical and strategic brilliance is precisely what has led the campaign to its current pass.

Darn I was going to post the Wimpy line. If RFK Jr thinks that DJT is going to reward him for kissing the ring, then his brain worm died of starvation.

If he ends up in the Cabinet, that would mean that Agent Orange is in the Oval and God will not even be able to help himself.

I could see Trump doing it to troll the libs though.

Betsy DeVos, proponent of school vouchers and charter schools, who was educated in private schools and was influenced by Christian Democracy principles, was made Secretary of Education.

Scott Pruitt, climate change denier who received large campaign contributions from the fossil fuels industry while running for the Oklahoma Senate, was made head of the EPA.

Making RFK Jr the head of HHS would be totally on brand for Trump.

I don’t think that he’d make it past senate approval for HHS secretary. Even if the Republicans control the senate its going to be close, and there have to be at least a handful of Republican senators from purple states who believe in science and realize what and absolute disaster RFK Jr. would be in that role.

Hopefully not.

DeVos only got approved after Pence broke a 50-50 tie in the Senate (the first time a VP tiebreaker was used to confirm a cabinet nomination), for what it’s worth.

I could see Trump doing it if RFK Jr gave him a large donation when it came time to nominate somebody.

Otherwise, plenty of other, loyal, generous people such a position can be given to.

While he will do things to spite people, he tends to target individuals. With groups, he does and says what he thinks will be the most popular.

So, that begs the question - how do RFK Jr and Shanahan think they can manage some kind of binding guarantee? There is no non-stupid, cogent line of reasoning that can lead to any sort of trust with Trump without some major leverage.

In 2017, RFK Jr. said he’d accepted an offer from Trump to head a commission on vaccine safety.

But if Trump ever made such a proposal, he backed away from it.

Maybe Junior will be offered the post of Vaccine Czar in Samoa if Trump wins.

No, not a donation, but instead a gratuity, which would be perfectly legal. Though I don’t think RFK Junior is rich enough to offer enough.

The difference is that destruction of the Department of Education was a platform of the Republican party, while full on anti-vax is a strictly minority opinion even among Republicans (22-49% depending on the question).

And I’m sure that dismantling the EPA is something most if not all Republicans would stand behind. You have a very good point here.

Seems to me that the more Junior tries to make some kind of binding agreement, the more liable both he and the Orange Felon become to prosecution under 18 U.S. Code § 201 - Bribery of public officials and witnesses.

Gratuities, wolfpup. Gratuities.

Piffle, appointing someone is an official act. Who’s going to investigate, charge, send a special counsel?

No one if Trump wins. But I’m starting to think he won’t.

This law may be the most relevant:

18 U.S. Code § 599 - Promise of appointment by candidate

Good point – I forgot that the Supreme Court has deemed that in the next Trump presidency, Trump will be anointed King and granted absolute powers under the principle of the Divine Right of Kings. Of course they could still try to throw Junior in jail, but then he’d be pardoned by King Donald of Orange and duly made head of Health & Human Services. IOW, the same high standards of ethics and competence exhibited in the previous Trump administration…
