I doubt that Richard Simmons is interested in maids.
But he was apparently never missing.
He’s been where he has been, in an expensive house maintaining a moderately expensive lifestyle, but suddenly and at length contradicting his decades-long public persona by refusing to leave his house or confront (at length, at least) his old friends.
Gotta say, don’t see Immediate Value There.
Before I issued judgment, I might consider how much he used to spend on his concerned old friends (disclosure: doesn’t seem to be much).
Google the time he went on Howard Stern and where he left the show crying. He sounds like he has alot of big issues and Howard and his gang were really asking him some hard questions (like if he was gay). Simmons acted like such a juvenile, walking out crying. A normal man his age shouldnt act like that.

I’m 40 and there are days I want to shut the world out and I never had the persona. I can’t blame him, and if I had money and a big house, I might just do the same.
It’s not a missing person case if you know where he is.
He’s done two interviews. Hope now people will accept that he’s simply retired from public life.
I noticed in the Macy’s parade photo that he had gained weight. Probably because his knee injury kept him from exercising. Weight may be a reason why he’s avoiding the cameras now. He wants to maintain his old image. Completely understandable.
That article kind of pisses me off. “Friends and fans haven’t seen him…” Um, just because you are a fan, even a super-mega-awesome fan, doesn’t mean you have any goddam right to see anyone. I swear, this is why the rest of us can’t interact with famous people - because some assholes can’t control themselves. Did you hear a fan BIT the Walking Dead star? Thankfully he took it in stride, but I swear, I’d be tempted to become a hermit.

Since Simmons is in his late 60s (when metabolism dies for many people) and has bad knees (which hinders exercise), I’ve also wondered if he may have gained weight that he doesn’t feel like having to justify. Though I’m sure that will be answered when an inevitable photo of him emerges.

I don’t think it’s saying fans have any right to see him. It’s just that he has very many fans, and, if he’s out in public at all, it’s kinda strange that no fans have accidentally bumped into him. Throw in that friends haven’t seen him, and it suggests he’s just not going out at all, and not just really good at disguising who he is in public.
As for voicing concern: not too many Dopers here are my friends, but I appreciate it when they show concern. As long as you aren’t demanding that the guy show himself, I don’t see any problem with voicing concern.
I’m not even really a fan, but I hope he’s okay, too. And yes, that bipolar thing is indeed possible.
Retiring from public life is completely fine.
But he seems to have also mostly retired from private life and I think that warrants a bit of investigation from the people in his private life.
Sure, they may find that they weren’t as far into his private life as they thought, and that’s cool, but I don’t think it is bad that they want to check into it.
That’s what we’re supposed to do when friends experience sudden significant behavioral changes.
Dropping out of the public eye is probably the sanest think a celebrity could ever do. We may not know the details of what and why he’s pulled back, but it’s really none of our business. If you’re really concerned, send him some fan mail or something and wish him well.
Greta Garbo did not stay holed up in 1 place when she retired. She still met with friends and even traveled.
I don’t care what your opinion (jesus that word sucks to type) of Mr Simmons is, his appearance on Whos line is it anyway is one of the greatest comedic achievements of our time. I will give that peppy basterd props til the day he dies for that. I hope hes happy and doing fine.
