Rick Sanchez takes on Jon Stewart... and immediately gets fired by CNN

Tell me one, just one, person this has happened to. Two would be better.

Black Jewish lesbian Masons, actually.

That’s how they keep their numbers down.

This just gives me a mental image of kind handlers leading them off set to a series of nice, sunny, airy chambers where they can relax until they’re needed again.

You know. Just like in Dollhouse.

Oh, and being a white(ish) chick I have heard plenty of racism toward both Hispanics and Jews. More than you might think against Jews, and not just from the Palestinian students on campus, but not quite so much as against Hispanics. In fact, this is not the first time I’ve heard a Hispanic guy railing against the “damned Jews who run everything”, and what does that mean? Zip, actually. Nothing. Except that people continue to be racist, and “Jews control the media” is damn prevalent.

Nevertheless, if you believe the “Jews are running the media!” undercurrent – no, actually current current – the rest of us are seeing is just hogwash, well, what’s to say? It’s sadly apparent.

Good question. Frankly I don’t know. I don’t think homosexuality is a choice so I lean towards the LGBT being a minority.

Pretty much each and every time he has a guest on who he doesn’t agree with he’ll make a quip and the audience will go nuts. He’ll then use that to effectively cut off the guest by changing a topic. It’s quite obvious what he is doing. If you can’t see that then I’m not going to be able to convince you.

Well given that the vast majority of illegal immigrants are Mexican or S. American this is hardly surprising. And if they are discriminated against, apparently it hasn’t stopped them getting jobs or coming to the US is massive numbers now has it? And please don’t confuse legitimate debate (i.e. how many is too many) with anti-illegal race baiting. I would say that the vast, vast majority of those against illegal immigration are basing it on the sheer numbers and the various economic problems illegals cause.

And if we want to discuss racism etc. then maybe ask why a hispanic like Sanchez can do so well where as the more Indian looking Mexican immigrant tends not to do so well. Heck, let’s just look south of the border and see the very obvious advantages that whites enjoy (by whites I mean people who look like Sanchez (yes, I know he is Cuban) who looks more like a person from Spain than an Indian from southern Mexico. Of course that’s a much more complex issue but an issue nonetheless.

Bad form. At least post a clip. You can’t say folks won’t see it if you don’t even try to show it.

Where, youtube or comedy central? May take a fair effort to track down mate but if you have a link that has archives then I’ll take a look. And my point is that as the crowd is vehemently pro-Stewart then they (and the pro-Stewart) viewer may not even notice it but it’s fairly glaring imho.

No, YOU made the claim, YOU back it up. That’s the way things work here. I look for evidence for my claims, you look for evidence to back up yours. And you’ve been here long enough that you should know that.

If you’re not willing to abide by that, you should go away.

Damn near the entire run of the show is here, although I think it suffers from the usual problem of only being accessible within the US. I’m trying to see if I can dig any up quickly, but I have a horrible memory for names and I’m having trouble pinpointing likely interviews where the audience turned it into a circus.

And it should be noted that “I can’t back up my assertion because the stack of clips is too big to search through effectively” is one thing, “I can’t back up my assertion because you won’t believe me anyway” is quite another.

Oh I agree and thanks for the link. I’ll do some digging and see what I can come up with. It’s so overt (to me) that it’s hard to think of a specific outright but not that hard! I’ll link accordingly.

Let’s not get carried away too much with the hyperbole. Hispanics are a wide and varied group that includes people who appear completely Caucasian, mestizo, or African. All of them are not “oppressed” and while some, such as illegal immigrants, may face discrimination, low wages from labor intensive jobs, and even suffer from those who prey upon them such as border coyotes or other criminals, none of it amounts to slavery. Particularly since coming to the US, for those who weren’t born here, is a choice.

Sanchez wasn’t decrying the current state of Hispanics in America. He was complaining about past instances in his own (very successful) career where he has perceived discrimination against him. And one of the primary pillars he was using to support this point is that Jon Stewart is a bigot. His own pity-me argument fails under its own stupidity. If he wants to be the champion of working Hispanics in the US, he needs to stop using his own life and career as some kind of exemplar.

Just a reminder to all that we’re in Cafe Society, not GD or the Pit – let’s keep it civil, please.

Thanks,

twickster, Cafe Society moderator

Has anyone else pointed out that Sanchez’s politics are considered liberal? At least that’s what everyone in South Florida says about him.

I hate that I feel like I am turning into The Spokesman for Jews Everywhere in this thread but as I have posted elsewhere, this is easy for you to say because clearly you aren’t Jewish.

I don’t mean to imply my family and I suffered horrible lives due to antisemitism but I can tell you that every person in my family experienced it. And I don’t mean we were being sensitive because the cashier at the supermarket looked at us funny or soemthing, I mean direct negative consequences from being Jewish in our personal and/or professional lives.

It happens, it has happened and it still happens and I resented Rick Sanchez for mocking the very idea that antisemitism exists (thus I started a Pit thread on it).

Liberals can be idiots too.

Here’s my take on the situation:

Stewart is a guy who makes fun of the news and can take himself out of the equation.

Sanchez is a guy who pretends to make fun of the news (poorly) but can’t take himself out of the equation.

P.S. My g/f and I would watch Rick’s List and mock it for shits and giggles.

I’m very skeptical of this claim that Stewart’s audiences make the environment hostile for people he disagrees with, at least to any meaningful extent.

Sure, there’s probably some degree to which a guest who gets applauded by the audience ends up having a better and more productive time than a guest who gets booed by the audience, but Stewart is so clearly committed to having honest and rational dialogs even with those he STRONGLY disagrees with (Rick Santorum) that to quibble about bits of audience byplay is missing the forest for the trees, or some such cliche.

In other words, TDS may not be a paragon of perfection when it comes to openness towards opposing views in interviews, but it does a pretty damn good job in the real world.

I’m 24, Jewish, and I have never felt that being Jewish was an impediment to my success. In fact there were many times in my life where I benefited from being Jewish.

I know that antisemitism used to be wide spread when my parents grew up, and most of the older Jews I know have suffered from it. But I just don’t see it in my case.

Maybe I don’t feel it as much because I’m not overtly religious, but neither is Stewart. However, Stewart is older than me and he might have had to face some discrimination growing up.

Not so much hostile as that he uses the audience to either deflec or deflate an issue. Just my observation and I’ll dig up a video when I have time.

As the minority issue, I think it’s important to remember that for this discussion we are defining minority as an oppressed upon group of people. I am from Ireland and I don’t consider myself a minority. Even when I was in London in the early 90’s when I felt some discrimination from a number of sources I still didn’t think of myself as a minority.

I base that on a number of factors but include the fact that I choose to go to the UK. I chose to move the United States. At some point you have to accept personal responsibility. Everyone can’t be a minority. Everyone isn’t oppressed. The more we accept the victim mentality the more we dilute the very real issues faced by genuine minorities in this country (i.e. Black Americans).

And while it’s not fun getting ugly looks or hearing negative comments about one’s ethnic or religious background being Jewish in the US is most certainly no longer a hinderence just like being Irish in the UK certain isn’t.

This thread is hilarious - some of you are trying to defend Sanchez’s basic points? Really?

He is guilty of being a twit and his comments simply illustrate that - and it seems clear that he knew he was on his way out and tried to go down in flames, but didn’t quite have the same vigor that Mr. Jetway-Inflate-o-Slide did

Whether there is a grain of truth to his assertions or he is an anti-semite, it doesn’t matter. It is no different than John Mayer holding up his relationships with his black friends and screwing that up by saying he couldn’t be really cool because he has no “n*****” card. He’s a twit via ego and delivery.

Shut up and go away, Rick.
