Have the board moderators ever considered doing the obvious and creating an automatic feature that locks every thread a year after its last post? Just pour salt in every thread’s mouth rather than waiting to see which ones will rise from the grave. ---

[/QUOTE] The board _Moderators_ are simply posters who have been given some authority _within the existing software_ to fix things and enforce rules. We Mods have, indeed, participated in discussions regarding enhancements to the software, but I have not yet heard of an automatic feature similar to your suggestion provided by vBulletin. (We are really not keen on user modifications; they are liable to interfere with existing software and they need to be re-implemented after each upgrade.) ---

Sorry, just got home from a long day… Yes, I locked it because it was reopened _four years_ after the final post. Nothing of new value was added to the thread in the re-animating post (is that a good term for reviving zombie threads?). On the other hand, a zombie thread was recently reactivated concerning the Civil War. There was some fascinating new information being presented in the OP, and it continued in the subsequent posts so it was not closed. See the difference? ---

This is the right forum for discussion regarding administration of the SDMB, right? Since two moderators have posted since I asked my question, and none have responded, I guess I have my answer. It is OK to indiscriminately bump threads for your own amusement. Is that correct? ---

There is a bit of a gap from “We will ban you if you ever do it again” to “it’s fine and dandy to do it whenever you want.” We have already noted, including the the rule that you quoted, yourself, that we frown on the practice of anything you might characterize as “indiscriminate” bumping “for your own amusement.” Your fallacious exclusion of the middle may not have been answered to your satisfaction, but the fact that zombie threads will be closed in nearly all Fora should be an indication that it is not something we promote. The fact that one particular poster happens to have engaged in that behavior FOUR WHOLE TIMES over the course of TWO WHOLE YEARS (in three different Fora, so that no Moderator would necessarily notice a pattern) does not qualify as a ringing endorsement of the practice, nor does it indicate that we are tolerating, much less encouraging, “bad” behavior. If it bothers you to have such loose guidelines to trouble your sleep, I’d be willing to propose a codicil to the existing rule, stating that if **Carol Stream** ever bumps a thread, that poster will forfeit any and all posting rights, forever, and that the nearest Mod will be sent directly to the home of **Carol Stream** to smash all the hard drives in the house. (I doubt that the staff would agree to such a rule, but I am willing to make the proposal in order to make your life better.) ---

If it’s not OK, then I suggest that the most effective way to deal with it is to actually WARN people against it, rather than let it slide. In other words, the people who respond to zombie threads are perhaps lazy at worst, for not checking the dates, but those who bump them should be held accountable, IMHO. ---
