Well, I only know of one Pope who ever made a joke in public, and that was John the 23rd. When asked “How many people work at the Vatican,” he supposedly put on a serious face, thought for a few seconds, then said, “Maybe half of them.” ---

This Pope goes to New York and is picked up at the airport by a limousine. He looks at the beautiful car and says to the driver, “You know, I hardly ever get to drive. Would you please let me?” The driver is understandably hesistant and says, “I’m sorry, but I don’t think I’m supposed to do that.” But the Pope persists, “Please?” The driver finally lets up. “Oh, all right, I can’t really say no to the Pope.” So the Pope takes the wheel, and boy, is he a speed demon! He hits the gas and goes around 100 mph in a 45 zone. A policeman notices and pulls him over. The cop walks up and asks the Pope to roll down the window. Startled and surprised, the young officer asks the Pope to wait a minute. He goes back to his patrol car and radios the chief. Cop: Chief, I have a problem. Chief: What sort of problem? Cop: Well, you see, I pulled over this guy for driving way over the speed limit but it’s someone really important. Chief: Important like the mayor? Cop: No, no, much more important than that. Chief: Important like the governor? Cop: Wayyyyyy more important than that. Chief: Like the president? Cop: More. Chief: Who’s more important than the president? Cop: I don’t know, but he’s got the Pope DRIVING for him! ---

Heh. Reminds me of a sketch I saw ol’ Bob do once. He was dressed up as the Pope, and doing a ‘commercial’ for the Vatican Express Card. “Belive it or not, sometimes people don’t recognize me. That’s why I carry the Vatican Express Card …” Anyone who has not already guessed the punch line of the sketch, trust me when I tell you that you don’t want to know. :rolleyes: ---

Of course, Happy. (I think it was “Don’t leave …”, but anyway …) My fertile pun-gland snagged it about halfway throught the sixty-second sketch. I don’t know if it’s worse having that sprung on you unexpectedly or to suffer through the anticipation. ---

Due to the financial difficulties experienced by the Vatican, the Pope is forced to take a commercial flight on his visit to the US and entertains himself on the plane by working on a cross word puzzle. He gets stuck on a word and kindly asks the passenger next to him, “Excuse me, my son, do you know a four letter word for a woman ending in -unt?” Embarrased, the passenger doesn’t know what to say as he doesn’t want to be rude to the Pope. Finally, inspiration strikes. “The word, your emminence, is aunt” His Holiness thinks for a second. “Yes, you’re right”, replies the Pope. “Could you loan me an eraser?” ---
