Fareway, an Iowa-based no-frills grocer, puts short-dated products on clearance. I’ve gotten things like yogurt for 25 cents a carton.

Kwik Star, also in the upper Midwest, often has all kinds of loss leaders. They had bananas for 29 cents a pound for several months.
