Dayam, let me share my best Cramps experience. They played in some divey little place in Sacramento circa 1983. Great set with maybe just maybe a hundred people in the crowd. Kinda fun crowd, nothng real wild, no slamming. Poison Ivy doing her normal blase look. Anyhoo, towards the end of the set, I got spun around for some reason and split the skin over my right eye open on some guys teeth. He was another KDVS DJ, no big deal. I went into the bathroom, used paper towels to staunch the bleeding, and went back out to enjoy the show.
Finished up and Lux said: we’re gonna do just one more song, what you do want to hear. People started shouting out their favs. Of course I was yelling “The Crusher” a coupla a times until he heard me. He looked down, saw the blood welling down my face, smiled, and said “I heard the one I want” and then launched into “do the hammerlock…”
It was great. That was 8 stitches and I still have my Cramps scar. RIP Lux
Sad day. Good story, China Guy.
NPR did a piece on him this morning…nice.
I’ve got 10 bucks for the jukebox tonight…you can guess what I’m torturing the bar with!
Damn. I saw the Cramps a couple of times at The Island, Houston’s best punk dive. At the first show, stage security was very scary during setup. We’d have to keep our distance, understand? Then the band started. Before the show ended, Lux had done everything but share bodily fluids with the audience…
The Mydolls were on the bill for that show. Houston’s almost-all-girl New Wave/Punk band started out with tons of style & energy–and eventually really learned to play music. Well!
Another Cramps show happened while a hurricane was filling the Gulf. It turned out to be a dud–coming onshore with little damage to anybody. But those scary radar images shouted “We’re All Going To Die!” So–let’s go see the Cramps…
Anyone got the straight dope on this “pre-existing heart condition”?
What was the condition? How long had he had it? How had it affected him?
They were touring last fall, right? I believe my buddy saw them in Vegas or LA around Halloween. And their last album was something like 4 years ago, but they have a long history of contract disputes.
Just curious, because everything I read simply says the same - “a pre-existing heart condition.”
