RIP Roger Ebert 1942-2013 [was 'Roger Ebert's cancer is back']

Or a good day.

Very unfortunate to hear this; always did like reading his columns.

The Chicago Sun Times is reporting that he has passed away.

=/

So sad. :frowning:

:(:(:frowning: UGH! I loved the guy’s reviews! Too bad.

RIP, Roger. You wrote some excellent reviews of sometimes very not-excellent movies.

That really sucks. RIP

RIP Mr. Ebert. A big thumbs up on the entertainment you provided throughout your life.

Actually kind of tearing up now.

I always liked Roger - agreed with most of his reviews, but even respected his reviews when I disagreed. And Ebert and Roeper was perhaps the best of the film review shows ever - always fun to watch, great to hear the two of them get into it, and never boring!

Quite a shock, actually, considering his recent announcement that he was simply going to retire a bit and get more treatment and then come back…

Very sad news indeed.

I was a fan. He was the best, IMHO.

RIP, Mr. Ebert.

Oh no. Very sad news. He was one of a kind. :frowning:

Just this morning I read a piece he had written about his plans to keep writing around treatments, and for his website and other plans.

This breaks my heart.

I would like to imagine that he’s just been greeted by Gene Siskel, who chided him about what took him so long, and they’re already off and running with a part-serious argument about some film.

Very sad. He was a part of my childhood.

Every time I refresh, this thread changes. So, before these threads were merged:

I saw the “Roger Ebert’s cancer is back” thread yesterday. Never though I’d see an RIP thread today. :frowning: I liked his sardonic way of taking apart movies he didn’t like, even when I liked the movie he reviewed.

This made me smile.

:frowning:

I knew him - I was on the board of his Overlooked Film Festival. I attended the Festival every year, and had many conversations with him. Back in the days when Roger could talk, you never met a wittier, funnier, man. But SO down to eath, considering his enormous fame.

This is a huge loss.

RIP

Damn, that sucks.

And it’s a weirdly fast progression.

This is the worst part. He seemed so optimistic about it yesterday. :frowning:

He will be missed. He was probably my favorite reviewer. More often than not, if he liked a movie, I liked that movie, and most of his negative reviews were of films I too didn’t like, so he was my go to barometer reviewer for whether I’d generally like a film. It’ll be hard to find someone similar.

I loved the way he wrote about films, and his ability to review a movie for what it was. He reviewed action films as action films, and didn’t hold them up to try and be something they weren’t…same with stupid comedies. He was truly a lover of cinema, and it came through in his reviews. I hadn’t been aware of his troubles with cancer before yesterday, since I would always just read his reviews, so today’s news is quite sad.

That was fast. I know his health hasn’t been good for a long time. He fought so hard these past few years. Trying to use computer software to regain his voice.

Time to rest. The theatre won’t be the same without your reviews.

R.I.P.
