I’m putting this here because she was not primarily a political commentator, she covered everything else that should have been included in All Things Considered. And because she has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Ms Stamberg was 87, and is survived by a son and two granddaughters. I hardly heard her voice for many years now, except in the holiday season when she was on (or maybe it was a tape) touting Mother Stamberg’s recipe for Cranberry Relish. I assume she had basically retired, but the NPR article said she retired just last month. Sounds like working until the end was something she wanted. ---

I loved her. She was one of the familiar voices of NPR to me. I heard her obit on NPR this evening, and they said “she always met her deadlines, and it was very considerate of her to die just early enough that they could run the obit this evening.” (Paraphrasing). I missed what she died of, but they talked about how small and light she has become at the end, but her voice was still strong. She broke ground for female reporters. Ah geez. That really sucks. I really enjoyed her. She’s no small part of what got me into listening to NPR. Also, one of the last “old-school” journalists. Not the bullshit we had today but someone who deeply believed in the values and ethics of journalism and an advocate for its role in civic life. Sad day. RIP ---

I just heard it on an ad to donate your car to NPR. That was a little creepy. ---

Surprising–usually broadcasters stop using the voices of deceased people, except in “tribute” sorts of circumstances. (For example CNN will use the James Earl Jones “THIS is CNN” voiceover in front of special presentations.) ---

Might not be any way to check, though I guess one could email NPR with ‘is that Stamberg’s voice on the ‘donate your car’ ad?’ (If it is, they might be too embarrassed to answer!)
