RIP Tina Turner (1939-2023)

By sheer coincidence, I have tickets to see that show when it comes around here in August.

Deargod, check out the photos in this WaPo article (gift link). Stunning.

Here’s another article with pics. Gift link.

For sure.

Private Dancer came out when I was about 10. Tina Turner, along the other singers you’ve mentioned + Bowie and Elton John were THE stars then.

I still absolutely love the title track. Before I heard it, I had never thought that a song could be sexy and sad at the same time. It would have been a great song anyway but, while she didn’t write it, she definitely brought it to the next level.

You wouldn’t find many performers remembered by a sporting body - NRL.

It features a still from Tina Turner’s iconic 1993 performance at the Grand Final.

Yeah, Tina Turner means footy to me, and nothing else really.

There are two I dont recognise in that photo. Back row, second left, next to mark king. and back row middle between midge ure and joan armatrading.

I think the back row middle guy, with Brian May’esque hair guy is John Illsley, Dire Straits’ bass player. Not sure about the second left.

Ray Cooper?

John Fogerty posted a nice tribute to Tina.

According to the photo credit shown on the page below:

I have never had a celebrity death hit me as hard as Tina Turners passing. I know she has a lot of love coming her way right now.

Her life was a triumph of the spirit!! :heartbeat:

She was an amazing woman. Inspiring and courageous and talented and resilient and so damn amazing!

I just loved so much of her music.

May she rest in eternal peace and love.

“Death is listening…and will take the first one that screams.”

Yes, I rewatched Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome last night in remeberance of Tina. She was awesome as Aunty (and at whatever she chose to do)! We are all just raggety men in her world.

I hadn’t realized that she had renounced her American citizenship.

Ms. Turner was a strong person who endured, and thrived, in the face of tough adversity. There’s a lot to be learned from that.

I hope her final years as a Swiss national were fulfilling, and her passing was peaceful.

Fun fact; “Private Dancer” was written by Mark Knopfler, the Dire Straits frontman.

The hits off that album are, by the standards of the day, pretty conventional 80’s power ballads; aside from Private Dancer, most are written by corporate pop song writers. What makes them classics is TINA TURNER. She just fucking destroys. She fills those songs with a level of vocal technique and feeling that very few humans who ever lived could have.

I always liked her duet with Bryan Adams, too, “It’s Only Love.” Again, it’s a pretty standard song, but now she and Adams are terrific. He’s got a weird, distinctive voice; they sound like no one else. It’s phenomenal, so much feeling.

She met some German music industry guy in the 80s, and they were happy together the rest of her life. That makes me very happy.

Every once in a while the universe corrects it’s mistakes and everything works out the way it should. We were all blessed to experience it this time. RIP Tina. Absolutely wonderful the way your life turned out.
