RO: Doctor withholds HIV meds out of disapproval of patient's homosexuality

My most recent psychiatrist had the same specialty and, obviously says the 44 year old, she saw adult patients as well.

I have no idea how to link stuff on my phone, but I did find another of those physician review sites that had legitimately bad opinions of her. However, it was a small sample size (only two) and one was from 2007, while the other was in 2009. They also sounded like typical complaints levied at “pill pushers”… not listening to the patient, simply handing out medication versus true diagnosis, etc.

The story does not appear in the local Star Register newspaper, or on the local channel 12 website.

Huh?

Quoting from the OPs link…

It seems to me that this doctor would be the first person sued by the plaintiff if all this is true and accurate. Makes me think there is more to the story than we’re heard.

Aren’t doctors allowed to pick and choose their patients? When I was shopping for a new G.P., I gave one my medical history, and she said she didn’t treat “my kind of people,” ordered me out of her office or she would call security.

Of course, I sure as hell would not have wanted her for my doctor, so *that *worked out alright.

They can to a degree, I believe protected class issues still apply. You cant refuse to treat someone because of race or ethnicity. Gender is a little different issue since there are relevant specializations in definite physiological differences between the two.

I’m going to ask you a serious question: do you know how to read?

For some reason I had a problem understanding what you meant but got it now. If this really happened as stated it would be reprehensible. The problem I have with the story is the source. That site only reports what is in court fillings. There is no independant reporting or investigation. The plaintiffs side of the story(or his lawyer’s interpretation) is obviously going to to be one sided. At this point of the procedure there is absolutely no proof needed to file a claim. There may not even be enough for the case to go forward. A judge will decide that later. All we have is someone who was admitted for unknown mental health reasons (it seems like it was involuntary) who now is suing for money. You have a doctor who has been working in a public hospital for 30 years in an area that has a decent sized open homosexual community and apparently has not had a problem before this. I am withholding judgement.

It happened to my friend two weeks ago in California. She’s married and was attempting to refill her birth control prescription (which is mostly so she doesn’t become bedridden during her period-- but yes, they also don’t want kids). The pharmacist refused to fill it AND refused to give it back. Nice, huh?

Anyway, I seem to recall that Jesus guy healing the sick regardless of their lifestyle choices-- in fact, I do believe that was a major theme in the whole healing part of the story. Not only is she a bad doctor, but she’s a shitty Christian to boot.

That has to be illegal. Theft, if nothing else. A quick call to the local cops should get the prescription returned and/or the pharmacist arrested.

I would think in one of the gayest areas of the country, this would be huge news.

I’ve seen the most blatantly false accusations made in many affidavits and lawsuits in civil courts about medical practicecomplaints, some of which were even aimed at me!

So I’d take it with a huuuuuuuuuuge shaker of salt unless some actual corroborating evidence is produced.

If the charges are true, then the doctor made various discriminatory statements. But it was the hospital which committed the actions like denying Simoes his medication. Legally, denying medical care is more serious than prejudice.

To some degree, yes. Any doctor may have ethical qualms or just may downright be out of her league with a particular patient’s medical history (for example, being inexperienced at treating a transman on hormones, or a pregnant woman with diabetes) and thus correct to turn the patient away.

For one not-bigoted example, I had to turn down a patient today. He’s got advanced venous stasis ulcers with infection, cardiac issues and a history of being noncompliant with his care plan. I’m too new a nurse to safely care for that, so I had to call my supervisor and have her reassign the case. I’ll follow along and learn, and perhaps take over the case in the future, but it would be malpractice for me to take him as a patient right now. Even experienced doctors/nurses have areas of medicine they just don’t know enough about, and it’s best for the patient if they’re referred elsewhere.

This case as reported (and I too would prefer to reserve judgement on the veracity/authenticity) is complicated by the fact that the patient was in a locked unit of a hospital at the time, and wasn’t (apparently) seen by another doctor in a timely fashion to continue his medication schedule when those medications are extremely time sensitive and it’s important not to skip a single dose, much less multiple days.

With your situation, you were free to seek another doctor on your own timetable. Inconvenient, yes, but it’s not quite as reprehensible as denying a patient when he’s not in a situation to seek another doctor.

But in this case, the doctor and hospital had accepted Simoes as a patient and then allegedly denied him proper care.

Word. That charge nurse should have been on the phone finding another doctor to order the meds ASAP.

But like QtM says, shaker of salt. Huge glowing aromatherapy salt lamp boulder of salt.

The stories of flatlined being a pedophile might be made up, but they might be true. I can’t find any corroborating sites saying flatlined was accused of raping five year old boys in a Texas lawsuit, but the stories might be true.

And what does it say about our message board if we allow flatlined, who may have sexually assaultied a cub scout troop at the San Antonio Zoo in 1997, post here? That story might be made up, but it might be true.

These questions need to be asked.

What in the hell are you talking about?

Making an analogy between flatlined and the doctor being accused here. By substituting flatlined and some crazy story that has no corroborating evidence supporting it for the doctor and the crazy ass accusations against her that have no corroborating evidence supporting it; AMWAG is trying to highlight the absurdity of jumping to conclusions.

Cracks up. I’m almost 35…can you change it to a bunch of 17 year old body builders? That would help my street cred a lot  Snarls like a cougar.

OK, I get your point. I live in a place so backwards that at times that I feel like I’m in a 4th world country. I honestly do believe what my friend told me about his transplant. The human rights abuses here are rampet. The only people who are more hated here than people with brown skin are the gays. Heck, we allow brown people to get married. How progessive is that?

I’ll try to stop looking at the rest of the world as if it reacts like my corner does.

PS…it was at the Phoenix Zoo…7 Eagle Scouts…in those cute uniforms. I went up to one of them to buy cookies and then offered them cigarettes to smoke in the boy’s room. You can find the rest of the story at Penthouse.
