I blame my lapses into social ineptitude as much as my luck, if not more. Women can be mysterious creatures, but they’re not evil. That’s why I kept carrying on … I’m about four months out of a two-year LTR; we had a mutual split after I moved to Austin last November. We’re still very good friends, as I am with most of my ex-girlfriends. I learned so much from her … ---

**Rune,** I’d have to guess that it’s because it’s not only hot chicks that can give of Teh Crazy vibe. Women probably dated him, saw he had some kind of Jon Arbuckle complex, and said “no thanks”. The ensuing years of rejection probably made it worse and worse, like a negative feedback loop. The dude just needed a cat. ---

There were (are?) services that specialized in matching oversees females that wanted to move to the U.S. and were willing to marry for it. Desperate men paid to get them via those services and it was expensive. I am sure there are still plenty of those services around but their business model probably changed over time as technology improved. ---

You can find it throughout the thread [here](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=212249), and there’s also a lot of discussion about the whole mail order bride thing and anecdotes from other people who knew couples like that. ---
