My bad. They were her sister’s children.

The Salon article does use an extreme case, but I can’t see what’s wrong with wanting mental health support for new mothers alongside greater support and understanding of mental illness and access to safe and legal contraception in Texas and everywhere else.

Accepting these rare, but possibly increasing occurrences as an inevitable side-effect of human nature, seems a little defeatist. If these kind of events did spring forth from a vacuum with no chance of prediction, then we would be fighting a lost cause, but I’d wager if you examined all these cases closely enough, there’d be signs of the perpetrator’s nuttiness before they went off the deep end.

Who says she was breastfeeding? In the photo from the Salon article, it looks an awfully lot like a formula can near the baby’s feet.

The Salon article postulated that she might have been off her meds because she was told she couldn’t take them and also breast feed. Or perhaps she was told she couldn’t take them while pregnant. It is known that she was unmedicated, and we can only theorize as to why. I do know that doctors encourage you to get off all meds that you possibly can while pregnant.

 Judas Priest - (Jack) The Ripper went right on as I opened this thread.

I feel sorry for everybody who was involved or had to witness any part of this, as well as for the mother who might have to live with the knowledge of her deed. I can’t really work up any anger against her, it’s just too fucked up, and she’s obviously extremely ill. ☹

I thought you weren’t going to converse with me any more? You really shouldn’t try, since you cannot seem to follow what I say. I’ll give it the old college try tho -

Who is saying it’s OK for women who are unqualified to have children? All the fundies who insist that it is so much better for a fetus to become a real person no matter what sort of life they will be born into. All of the people who think it’s a grand idea to send money to women who are living in squalor when they have babies, because OMG we can’t do anything but support them once the baby is here! Or how about all the folks that think that sex education is a bad thing, and easy access to birth control is evil? All of the doctors that will not sterilize anyone, particularly women, until _they_ feel the time is right.

And that is just off the top of my head…

What, exactly, do you think is a terrible idea? Something I actually said, or something you have decided I have said?

> [@](#):

Someday you might actually read what I write. On that day, I will save the post and photoshop something nice around it.

> Free adults are able to make choices of which other people disapprove, and we can’t stop them. What we can do is, when they ask for help, we can help them, so they don’t compound a bad decision into a horrendous nightmare. I know you see this as implicit approval of the bad decision, but the alternative is not to help these people, let them do horrible things, then sit back and say, “See? I told you so!” Not great as public policy, though I’m sure for you it’s very emotionally satisfying.

Which, of course, has nothing to do with what I said. What else is new?

1. Gosh, sorry I made the mistake of assuming that someone who could read the article had the facts straight.
2. It doesn’t happen very often that anyone is counseled to not have children.
3. She could have aborted, she could have put the kid up for adoption, she could have given it to the father, she could have given it to a family member. She obviously knew that there was something going wrong with her mind, yet neither she nor anyone around her felt that it was a problem for her to be raising a newborn. A job that makes jibbering idiots of many “normal” women at times…

Am I?

> [@](#):

> I’ll say this one more time, for the record: in this free society, no one can stop people from having children. I know, you’d like it to be different, but that’s the way it is. Now, when an unsuitable candidate for motherhood has a child, can’t handle it, and makes numerous cries for help, what should you do?

Take the child away. As I said, society has this idea that a child belongs with it’s mother no matter what sort of nutcase she is, and children are abused and killed because of that idea. Frequently. And no one seems to be interested in changing the assumption that a child will always be better off with it’s mother.

Well, since this is the first time you’ve bought up this line of argument, how was I supposed to follow it from what you said before? You talked about society, and how supporting this woman meant that it was OK that she had a baby, but I see now you’re changing your argument. Typical.

Now you’re saying she should have had an abortion. OK, but she didn’t. I don’t think you’re in a position to tell people they should or have to have a medical procedure if they don’t want one. That is outside of your control, no matter how much of a good idea you might think it is. What the woman did want was help, and she didn’t get it.

> [@](#):

All of the doctors that will not sterilize anyone, particularly women, until _they_ feel the time is right.

So this is a convenient opportunity to get on your soap box about the evils of having children if you’re poor, and how society doesn’t hate them like you do. I think it’s really sickening that you’d use a situation like this to continue to hammer home the same, tired points. Also, not a single person in this thread has espoused any of the views you are railing against here. So, unless you’re just ranting because it makes you feel good, how about you stay on topic?

It has EVERYTHING to do with what you said. You said:

So, are you stating that we should give LESS support to people like Sanchez? What are you suggesting we do, once the baby is born, for people like her? Try not to rant about who should or should not be having babies (with sidebars about welfare moms, forced sterilization, fundies, etc.), or who you think ought to have an abortion. Please, try to read this carefully and answer the question.

I agree with most of that, but do we really need to have mental health support for all new mothers? How often does the average “normal” mother go off her nut?

[10% of the time, apparently.](http://psychiatry.jwatch.org/cgi/content/citation/2002/523/14) Some say as high as [20%](http://www.child-psych.org/2009/06/postpartum-depression-teens.html) Certainly worthy of screening and support.

Good for you, and good for you that you were able to post that in such a clear way. Last time, your response to me saying “We aren’t doing that. We are supporting the idea that it is ok for a woman to have a child(ren) no matter what her circumstances are, and then we are surprised/shocked when things go wrong.” was merely “Who is saying it’s OK? I think it’s a terrible idea.” Then you went on about free people being able to have all the children they wanted, how we are supposed to help them when the ask, etc. Not a thing about schizophrenics.

The author of the article seems to feel that the answer to things like mothers eating their newborns is to provide support to _new mothers_. Not just people with severe mental problems, or people who have asked for help - _all new mothers_. As if one needs to monitor and support them all just in case they decide to do something like this. I didn’t think much of the government telling my doctors that they were to treat me at all times as if I were pre-pregnant - if I were to have had a child, I doubt I would think much of the government following me around making sure I wasn’t going to eat it.

And now, I have a life and so must sleep. I leave you to your issues until tomorrow.

I don’t want to PM with you. I am entitled to ask you to stop PMing me. When I ask you very clearly to stop, but you keep doing it regardless, don’t you think you’re the one with the problem? Don’t you think you’re the one who is pissed about not getting the last word?

> [@](#):

Yes, this is the first time you’ve brought up the fundies, and the anti-birth control advocates. Before, it was all about society pressuring women to have children, even those who shouldn’t. So, when it was pointed out to you that no one so far has condoned this woman giving birth, you turned to the fundies as proof. None of whom have spoken up on this event either way that I know of, esp. not in this thread, and thus are irrelevant.

> [@](#):
>
> Abortion was only one of the suggestions I had, but then you do like to dwell on little bits of my posts in the most negative manner you can, don’t you?

I think it’s your point-- she should have been counseled not to have a baby. She should have had an abortion. Women like her shouldn’t have children. It’s all about what she should have done before the child was born. You have utterly failed, time and time again, to address what should happen once the child is born, since none of us have any way to prevent women in bad situations from having babies. Sanchez may well have been counseled not to conceive. She may have even used birth control. We don’t know, and speculation is fruitless. It’s a tragedy that she had this baby, obviously, but even after the child was born, the tragedy could have been prevented.

> [@](#):

> Good for you, and good for you that you were able to post that in such a clear way.

Bad for you, that you were unable to read it twice, and jumped to the conclusion, erroneously, that I was disagreeing with you, and getting all snide about it for nothing.

> [@](#):

People ARE free to have all the children they want. That’s just a fact. We are supposed to help them when they ask, or babies wind up dead. What are you disputing?

For accusing me of disagreeing with you and not being able to read, when I agreed with you but you missed it because YOU are unable to read.

Somewhere between 10-20% of new mothers suffer from postpartum depression. Don’t you think that’s a problem worthy of at least screening? And being taken seriously as a health issue that arises for new mothers? But aside from that, reread your quote.

> [@curlcoat](#):

You seem to be disputing the idea that people with severe postpartum mental illness should have more support than Otty Sanchez got. Are you saying they should have less support? If so, why?

Uh, no, I am amused. You tell me to quit responding to you in the what else do you want thread (? can’t remember now) and start PMing me. Then you tell me to quit responding to you on PM after you get your last say in, and then threaten me with the mods, while starting up responding to me on the board again. I am just waiting to see what the next incarnation will be.

BTW, apparently you are not allowed to threaten me with the mods because I answered a PM, tho I haven’t pursued the matter - I wasn’t clear the first time I asked about it and haven’t gotten around to responding yet.

OK, you are having the same trouble following things again. I said that society pressures women to have children, you say “who does that, no one does that”, so I say fundies, anti-choicers, drs, etc. You then say this is the first time I’ve brought this up, but I’m changing it, whatever that means. Now you are trying to say that I am stating that someone condoned this woman giving birth? Where did you get that? All I have said is that society as a whole pressures women to have children, particularly to give birth once they become pregnant and you are off on a rant about whether or not we know if anyone specific did anything to this woman?

As for irrelevant - I would think it is highly relevant that our society pressures women who are unsuited to have children. This is merely one more example of what happens when the only prerequisite to everyone thinking it’s a grand idea to have a baby is a working uterus.

Except for everything I have said in this thread alone about what should have been done once she had the child. You know, when I said a couple of posts ago “she could have put the kid up for adoption, she could have given it to the father, she could have given it to a family member” and you decided to only zero in on the fact I led off with abortion? Remember that?

Quoting from the post you are quoting - “that it is ok for a woman to have a child(ren) no matter what her circumstances are”. I am talking about societys attitude towards baybees, that all women should want and have them, that having a baybee will make everything right, fix all wrongs and all of the other stuff that TV and movies have led you all to believe.

Here you are, defending the right of a diagnosed schizophrenic to have a baby without anyone bothering to be concerned as to whether or not it is a good idea, not to mention the child was sired by another diagnosed schizophrenic. You wring your hands over the brutal death of the baby and talk about how you “just don’t need this sort of story right now”, demand that we spend money to monitor all new mothers, yet the idea of spending money to _prevent_ babies being born into situations with this sort of potential you freak out about. You keep falling back on “people ARE free to have all the children they want” because “that’s just a fact”. Yes, it is a fact but that doesn’t mean that there is nothing to be done about all these babies - that YOU are supposed to be so concerned about - being born into situations where they are abused and killed. And eaten.

OK, now we have gotten to you saying that I thought you disagreed with you, but we still haven’t gotten to anything about what you are talking about. Another 10 or so posts you might bother to be specific, eh?

> Somewhere between 10-20% of new mothers suffer from postpartum depression. Don’t you think that’s a problem worthy of at least screening? And being taken seriously as a health issue that arises for new mothers?

I have no idea since I have no experience in that area, but from what other posters have said, postpartum depression is not what is at issue here, it is postpartum psychosis, which is apparently not near as common. Also, seems to me I paid for an awful lot of well baby visits when I was doing insurance, so aren’t these women being seen by their GP or pediatrician regularly already?

> You seem to be disputing the idea that people with severe postpartum mental illness should have more support than Otty Sanchez got. Are you saying they should have less support? If so, why?

This is exactly what I said - “The author of the article seems to feel that the answer to things like mothers eating their newborns is to provide support to new mothers. Not just people with severe mental problems, or people who have asked for help - all new mothers. As if one needs to monitor and support them all just in case they decide to do something like this.” How do you go from me saying “all new mothers” to you thinking I am talking about just Otty Sanchez?
