Do you still have your L plates on Pookah? Once you get rid of them other drivers tend to be a little less inclined to tailgate and harass you …
Or worse than L plates do you have those green ‘P’ plates.
Noone seems to have metioned road positioning yet (though I skim read…)
If you are planning to overtake it is good to move towards the right side of your lane as this shows your intention to those behind and gives you better view of the road ahead. If your positioning was more to the left, the car behind may have guessed you weren’t going to try and overtake. If an opportunity to overtake seems unlikely to occur but the car behind seems to want to overtake, then it is worth creating space between yourself and the tractor to allow the idiot behind to risk their own life without putting yours or the tractor driver’s in danger.
Even if you clearly are trying to overtake, there are plenty of morons around who will try to overtake both you and the tracktor in front, this is one of those situations where two sets of eyes would be useful, so you can be fully aware of what is infront and behind whilst you overtake. If you remembered your mirror-signal-manoover routine, then you should be safe, even if you force the idiot behind to move back into lane. But little is more dangerous than a driver who is timid and does not use their signals before they make a manoover.
sigh Yes, I still have leper plates. And I think you’re right. The combination of young-ish woman, small car and L-plates just seems to scream “tailgate me” even when I’m not driving badly or particularly slowly.
Bippy, I don’t know what “P” plates are. We don’t seem to have them here.
To all in thread: I think there are two sides to the story. Those of you who say I’m a bit slow and deserve to stuck behind the tractor are probably right in some of the instances. Mind you, when it’s the kind of road where I know I’m not going to overtake I do leave a gap between me and slowpoke for the braver drivers to move into.
Then again, some people are just plain rude. We’ve all met those young lads in their souped up Honda Civics (or whatever the equivalent of lad-mobile with spoilers is in your region) or yuppies in company cars (yes, we have yuppier in Ireland nowadays ) whose time is just so much more precious than anyone else’s safety. And as above, people do seem to make some assumptions on how I’m going to driving, sometimes but not by all means always rightly, from the looks of the car.
So it depends on the occasion, really. Bit of non-answer but there you go.
Little aside: Even though Irish driving can be completely hair-raising, I find they are also the best in any country I’ve been in at letting you onto the busy main road or letting you go first at a junction. Just for balance.
“P” Plates are Probational plates that you would display for (half year I think) after passing the driving test in UK. They were required by some insurance companies. Don’t know if the idea really caught on though.
I’ve never known anybody actually use P-plates (nor green L-plates) - and I’ve certainly never heard of any insurance company requiring them. It’s much easier for them to just charge sky-high premiums instead.
Well by charging higher premium if you don’t have P plates was the insurance companies trick. But I just got myself added onto my dad’s car insurance policy and so avoided this problem.
In the UK, slow-moving vehicles are supposed to pull in every so often to let traffic past.
