I went to Austin a couple of weeks ago for a wedding & to hang out for a few days with family. At a casual pre-wedding gathering, the best man (a non-Texan whom I’d never met) heard I was from Houston; he immediately said he’d heard there were great places to eat in Houston.
Looks like the OP has found that a different route will serve him this trip. But he might use I-10 for some later vacations from Atlanta. To visit Legendary New Orleans. Or see my favorite Texas city, San Antonio. Or come to Houston–to eat! (It’s not a great tourist city but you can eat well if you’ve got a native guide.)
I agree that it sounds like you’re not taking 10, so my lament that the stretch of 10 from Van Horn to 290 is eye-gougingly dull, won’t really matter. One advantage that 10 offers is easy access to some of the finest barbecue on the planet. Luling is about 10 minutes or so from 10, and offers two very tasty BBQ joints. Lockhart is 20 minutes away and offers three insanely tasty BBQ joints. 10 is still being worked on in Houston, but it’s not that bad.
The stretch of I-40 from Albuquerque to Santa Rosa is very pretty.
