It’s just a mildly wry comment on the fact that the media never, ever asks whether we’re “ready” for a white anything because we’ve lived all our lives with whites in positions of power. It wasn’t a slur against whites or conservatives. I understand fully why Newt Gingrich is making hay of it, because he’s an opportunist and thoroughly dishonest down to his cholesterol-soaked marrow. I’m completely baffled why anyone else, including people in this thread, would fail (or at least profess to fail) to understand what the joke was and why there was nothing offensive about it. Disappointed that the response from Michelle Obama wasn’t “really, Newt? _REALLY_?” but such is the world we’ve created. ---

When his own mother was a little girl, Union forces arrested her mother and other relatives for giving aid and relief to the Confederates and burned the family’s farm. When she was in her 90s and her son was president, she still hadn’t forgiven it. I doubt his mother-in-law was quite as personal in her anger since she was too young to remember the war, but her family had also been CSA. ---
