Robert Hall Clothing Stores

More Robert Hall memories:

  1. I worked with a guy in the Eighties who was a pretty sharp dresser, and when people told him, “Nice suit”, he’d say, “Yeah, Robert Hall had a sale”, and everybody would crack up.

  2. I had a teaching assistant in the late Seventies who wore loud and cheap sport coats–think early Bobby Knight–so we called him Bob Hall. Not to his face, though.

  3. One of the Halls was turned into a bowling alley after it closed, and one of my friends never wanted to bowl there because he was traumatized by his mother forcing him to shop there when it was a Robert Hall.

I remember Robert Hall stores in the LA area in the late 50s and their pride and joy: “Suits for $29.95”. For a kid in high school who only wore suits on Sunday, the quality was not an issue.

It should be noted that Robert Hall was not the first to conquer living space.*

*that honor of course belongs to the Castro Convertible (sofa), whose jingle was almost but not quite as obnoxious as Robert Hall’s.
**I had to bring this up in an attempt to banish the Hall jingle from my brain. Now both of them are fighting it out in my cranium.

I mostly remember the Joke:

“Got that suit from Robert Hall?”

“Yeah, Robert threw it out and I hauled it in!”
