_The Big Sleep_ was originally a novel by Raymond Chandler. The quote is from Ch III of the novel (p 24 of the Penguin edition) when Marlowe meets Mrs Regan for the first time at General Sternwood’s house. This is one of the few times when it is hard to know whether to recommend the book or the film - both are great.
