Rolling Blackouts - Why Not Shut Down Industry

And as far as his wife is concerned, my Scottish Calvinist grandmother would say that you lay down in the bed which you make.

Funny coincidence. I mentioned in the other current weird weather thread that we had a hefty thunderstorm just after dusk Tue, which is more summery weather than Feb weather for us.

Our 'burb has two different water companies each serving about half the town. The main pumping plant for one of the two companies took a direct lightning strike last night that knocked out their pumps. So now half the town is under boil water orders for a couple days and they hope to get pressure & volume back to normal before 48 hours have elapsed.

I’m luckily in the other half of town and unaffected.

Mother Nature is just flat pissed at us all.

Oh, here’s something I just read on CNN: the chair of ERCOT lives in Michigan (wonder if he was also involved in sourcing water for Flint, MI?) and the vice-chair lives in California. Wanna bet THEIR lights and heat are still on?

I think more of these folks running these political/governmental committees and non-profits and whatevers should be living where they get to “enjoy” the consequences of their decisions. It might make for some better decision making.

Sort of similar to that and based on something I read in a Robert Heinlein story, I think the CEOs and boards of companies with factories and plants that discharge water into rivers and other waterways should have their homes supplied with that outflow. If they’re expected to bath in and consume what’s coming out of that factory, I think we can expect they might improve their wastewater treatment systems.

Meanwhile, it appears (unconfirmed!) that Ted Cruz is flying to Cancun, abandoning Texas.

Freezing in the dark is only for the little people - the rich and powerful relocate.

Honestly, I’d like there to be a way to force those making bad decisions to actually have to live with the results.

Meanwhile, some other people are getting off their asses and trying to do something about to help.

Responding to several earlier posts, and adding one item:

Digital television decoders are now sold as conversion boxes/digital recorders. Here’s one:

The Heinlein quote is from “The Happy Days Ahead”: “You simply require every user to place his intake immediately downstream from his discharge of effluent into the stream. In self-protection the user cleans up his discharge. It’s self-enforcing.”

Back in the days of CRT computer screens, companies had to consider their heat load on office buildings.

During the 2019 extreme cold snap in February, the governor of Michigan asked companies to shut down - in order to ensure continued supply of natural gas.

Fox News confirms Ted went on Vacay while his wife’s company, Goldman Sachs, Enroned Texas:

He is hurriedly flying back, tho:

In unrelated news, my dog and I are now warming up in my car, going on day 4 with no electricity:

Also, the memes will be incredible, and likely worthy of their own thread:

Oh boy, I hope that airport is packed with reporters.

Lol, given all this, his return flight will be in the Guiness Book for ‘most documented flight for one person by fellow passengers’. Expect pics as the situation develops.

How was it not obvious to him that flying to Cancun was a really bad political move?

He probably assumed he’d escape notice. Real unlikely in this day and age, but nobody ever said Ted Cruz was a deep thinker.

I’m a pissed off Texan sitting in my car to charge my neighbors phones, keeping my dog warm, and if I rage post memes about the evil, malignant GOP and their constituent parts, then so be it:

That Dallas Morning News front page is genius!!

Senator Cruz, when asked about his priorities and his commitment to the Texans he represents, had this to say:
