This popped up to me. I’m not a historian in any depth but I got caught up in this. Not vouching for accuracy but interesting.

The author pointed out that the ‘eastern’ line couninued to that point. This article was up to the fall of Rome as stated.

The term “Byzantine Empire” was created after the Roman Empire was conquered. The folks in Constantinople called their country the equivalent of “Romanland”. There was technically no such thing as a Byzantine Emperor.

The adjective Byzantine can also mean complicated, devious, impenetrable, and obscure…  
much like my joke, evidently.
