Still the deciding argument seems to be Reagan’s manner - his presence. So, was Reagan just a front for man Peggy Noonan? Perhaps she could have done the same for a Gregory Peck, Arthur Godfrey, Herb Schriner or Paul Harvey.

Give Paul Volcker credit for that (and Carter credit for selecting him to head the Fed). The role Reagan played was to renominate him after the groundwork had been done.\

As the “great man” reminded us, “Facts are stupid things.”

And to fire him when he disagreed with the degree of financial deregulation the Reagan administraton wanted.
