Root-Beer Floats

Just had this tonight. I put three scoops of vanilla in a tall chilled glass, fill it with IBC root beer and sip it with a straw, refilling it as I go. (If I’m really thirsty I’ll sometimes go through two glass bottles of IBC that way). Then I eat the root-beer-saturated ice cream with a spoon. Mmmm.

I suggested some of these to the wife, and her answer was, predictably: “I don’t like vanilla.”

My great-grandmother called root beer floats ‘Boston Coolers’. When I was a teenager in the 60’s I used to mow her rural West Virginia lawn in the summer and a Boston Cooler was my reward.

Over 60 posts into a thread about floats, and no one has brought up the delightful Cheerwine Float?

Nothing tastes like summer quite like this does.

Huh. Never heard of Cheerwine. Just googled it. Looks good. How would cherry ice cream go with that, I wonder.

FYI, If you’re ever eating at a Red Robin (and if you haven’t, and are near one - what’s wrong with you?), they have a bottomless Root Beer Float where they bring you a giant mug of ice cream, and a separate giant mug of root beer - and then you can pour it as you’d like. And when you’re just about done with it, they show up with two more giant mugs of ice cream and root beer. Just my little public service announcement for the day.

Oh. My. God.

Why have I never heard of this? :frowning:

Yeah, I’ve done that. I felt like a blob the rest of the day, but that is damn good. That and a Royal Red Robin will put you into a food coma for a few days.

Picked up a 2l bottle of Vernor’s at the WalMart in Waterford CT this afternoon. Haven’t had it in years…
