I started from memory also, and had to look up Bruce (“Oh my freaking Gawd his laundry list could be the best thing I read this year”) Sterling on Wiki to confirm the character name. Although it’s not “last words”, I vividly remember reading the “chapter” where someone is trying to ransom Leng’s childhood teacher - an AI program. “Why do you think an AI has any abstract value?” Leng asks the kidnapper. “Because I am one,” the kidnapper replies.
