When I post a cite saying 5 years and then **Rubystreak** claims my cite says 3 years and mocks my reading comprehension over it, I was a little miffed. Then claiming that the initial comment was never said, when it was clearly stated in his/her post, that just went over the edge. I’m sad someone that would keep lying to ‘win’ an arguement on the internet is teaching our youth. As for past issues? I dunno, I could have had a run in with **Rubystreak** in the past, but I sure don’t remember it. ---

fachverwirtt, I’m not sure what you have to do anymore. Used to be you could get your undergrad degree in whatever, get the MAT, and teach. Now, your undergrad degree has to have a “pedagogical core.” Not sure if you take care of those ed requirements as an undergrad, if you can just get an MA, take the exams, and get a cert. If I’m reading that paragraph correctly, it seems to say the same thing, but it’s a little ambiguous. Sorry, not a cite, but a personal anecdote that directly relates to your question so I figure it might count. 🙂 My sister has a Masters in music performance too, not in Education, and she’s been teaching music in both elementary and middle schools here in NYC for about fifteen years. So my guess is that things might be the same here – the requirement is a Masters in field of expertise, not Education. Or maybe this is just true for music teachers, I dunno. ---

People are assholes in the Pit (and other, less acceptable forums) all the time without spawning vitriolic OP’s like this. Also, he didn’t Pit me because I was an asshole to him. That I would have admitted to, because I don’t fucking like the guy, yeah, I was an asshole to him. What, someone’s being an asshole in the Pit? Kidchameleon chose the 2nd, and when you continued to be an asshole, opened the Pit thread. Which is entirely reasonable. I suspect Kidchameleon was trying to match you in degree of assholishness, but in fact surpassed you. You never know whose shit is going to stink worse until the two piles are sitting side by side. ---

I don’t think female teachers need sensitivity training to deal with male students because it’s covered in their education. Married to a NYS teacher so I thought I’d point something out… The new rules for getting the initial certificate do in fact let you get a 5 year grace period on getting a Master’s, however you do need to complete a certain amount of student teaching _even for the initial cert_. This is a big deal because it means that if you did not attend an undergraduate program for education you would almost certainly have to have completed (or be most of the way through) a MAT or similar program just to complete the student teaching requirement. Put another way, it means that virtually all teachers starting after 2004 will have to have a degree (whether undergrad or graduate) from a program specializing in education just to get the initial certificate. I mention this because it’s relevant to the discussion about how long teachers stay in the profession… if you are looking at attending a specialized program just to get the initial cert, you are probably not intending to bail out in 3-4 years. You’re going to plan on getting the master’s as soon as you can to get it out of the way so that you can continue after 5 years. ---
