Just to be a dork, I looked up “Hive mind” in a google newsgroups search. the earliest instance of it I could find was [here](http://groups.google.com/groups?q=+%22hive+mind%22&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF8&scoring=d&as_drrb=b&as_mind=25&as_minm=6&as_miny=1983&as_maxd=25&as_maxm=6&as_maxy=1984&selm=366%40houti.UUCP&rnum=2) . It is mentioned twice that year, and only sporaticaly throughout the next ten years, and then only in talk of incects or religious groups. In 1991 you start to get mentions of the hive mind as it relates to the Borg. You also get a few references to the Net as a hive mind, but none that I could find that were using it disparagingly as our pal here has. In 1992 [this post](http://groups.google.com/groups?q=+%22hive+mind%22&start=10&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF8&scoring=d&as_drrb=b&as_mind=25&as_minm=6&as_miny=1992&as_maxd=25&as_maxm=6&as_maxy=1993&selm=1992Jul30.122656.7181%40wetware.com&rnum=19) comes tantalizingly close, but doesn’t quite make it. in 1994 [This post](http://groups.google.com/groups?q=+%22hive+mind%22&start=10&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF8&scoring=d&as_drrb=b&as_mind=25&as_minm=6&as_miny=1993&as_maxd=25&as_maxm=6&as_maxy=1994&selm=CpEEAE.1Lv%40pell.com&rnum=17) refers to some kind of homosexual hive mind. Must remember to ask Esprix about that.
