Rural people, how often do you see snakes?

North Central Minnesota here.

It’s a rare day during the summer that I don’t see at least one garter snake. Saw one today, in fact.

'Course, all my land is an “appropriate area.” They’d have to go pretty far to be inappropriate–at least 6 miles to the nearest sidewalk.

East TN, USA. I do a lot of walking about the little valley where I live. I encounter king snakes about once a week. I also found a nest of copperheads on a ridge a few miles from my place.

But, just like Rysdad, they are in appropriate places. I suppose the only inappropriate places would be in one of my buildings. One of the king snakes that I share the property with suns itself on a less used pathway. King snakes are welcome here anytime, though I imagine if one were in my house then my guests would be unhappy.

Sidewalks?

I live in the country and see snakes fairly often, usually when I’m mowing the lawn or getting chicken water. (We have a rat snake habitation near the pump.) I’ve never seen a snake on the blacktop, but I see them fairly often on the gravel road.

Baby garter snakes are The Cute, BTW.

I see garter snakes every few days when it’s warmish. They like our fish pond. Sadly, they keep the frogs down. Really I’d rather have the frogs, but it isn’t up to me.

Gopher snakes, occasionally; I wish we had more of them, our cat died and we have a lot of gophers. They bask on our driveway (which is a mile long) when it is sunny but cool, which is an inappropriate place in the sense that they are hard to avoid running over, they look like sticks.

Never seen a rattler nor heard of one here, they are rare near the coast. Rubber boas, a few times a year, usually in the firewood, or if I happen to turn over a log or a rock. Love those tame, placid little guys. They’ll go to sleep in your pocket. And they’re rubbery!

We live on half a hectare, and our neighbour on the longest boundary is an unoccupied 13 hectare paddock that has cows on it a few months of the year. To date, we’ve seen no snakes. Snakes are a protected species so we wouldn’t be allowed to kill them… if anyone was watching.

I see snakes fairly regularly (every other week or so) on the trails around San Jose and the Bay Area. Gopher snakes are the most common, followed by garter snakes and rattlers. I’ve seen a couple of rubber boas and king snakes, too.

Here’s a thread I posted last year about corn snakes mating in a tree in my yard. They were beautiful.

In Australia? Really?

I live in North Carolina and I’ve seen 4 live snakes around the yard in the last month. A small copperhead behind our bushes, two green snakes in the front yard, and one black snake in the back yard. I see dead snakes on the roads around here about once a week.

Of the times I’ve lived in rural(ish) areas, the only time I’ve seen a snake in an inappropriate place was when a classmate trapped a viper, put it in a jar with holes in the lid and brought it to class. The teacher sent him to release the poor thing at the riverside (an area where there are vipers of that kind), with a couple of chaperones to ensure he actually did.

Suburban Jackson, MS; at least once weekly at work. We are in the middle of a nice wooded area, and you can see all kinds of wildlife out there while walking. It’s usually black snakes, but I have seen a copperhead. I’ve had to get several black snakes off the porch and place them back in the woods.

Garter snakes are indeed adorable.

I grew up in the country and it was an uncommon experience - maybe a few times a year. When we were kids, my brother and I would have considered seeing a snake something worth calling the other one over to see (but not our sister as she hated snakes).

I spend a lot less time outdoors then I did when I was younger and I don’t remember the last time I saw a snake in the wild.

Snakes are protected by law in all states and territories of Australia and may not be killed unless they threaten life. Offences under the Nature Conservation Act 1980carry severe penalties. Snakes cannot be taken from the wild; kept without a licence; or traded without a licence.*

Urban South Florida: Twice a month at least.

Working in the yard I see garter snakes all he time. I’m expecting to see even more next year, as our chipmunk population has recently exploded.

Fairly rural (the “suburbs of a rural town”), and almost never, even when I more regularly went outside. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen a snake in person. I’ve seen little lizards and frogs, though.

Not that rural. We have several garter snakes around the house. An occasional Black Snake runs through. I’ve heard reports of Water Mocassions in the area, but haven’t seen one myself.

I saw a little green snake once, with a little blue tail, but I think I was drunk at the time.

It was the copperhead that my husband didn’t see that got him two weeks ago.

This photo was taken less than 50’ from my house. I see snakes in appropriate places, like the yard, about once a year. I’ve seen 3 or 4 snakes dead in the road, and maybe one alive one, but that’s about it.
