He is said to have “advanced cancer.” If so, it is the only thing about him that’s advanced. ---

I understood that cigar smokers did not typically inhale the smoke and (if that is true) his cigar smoking should not have contributed to his lung cancer. Have I been misinformed? ---

Many cigar smokers don’t inhale. I smoke an occasional cigar, and I don’t. I presume some do, though. I’m more interested in the shit that came out of his mouth than went into it. To be fair, I guess we don’t know for sure that his cancer is smoking related. ---

I won’t cheer – I feel it’s bad karma\*. I won’t mourn, either, though. So I’m basically indifferent. However, I’ll express my sympathy for the dude’s family, especially if he has any children. That’s it. \*Unless it’s somebody REALLY evil. Limbaugh’s a douchebag, but he doesn’t cut it. I’m talking murderers, rapists, child molestors, etc. ---

Nicotine, and many other chemicals, are going to make it to most every cell in your body even if you don’t inhale as the lining inside your mouth is a mucous membrane. However, even if you’re not inhaling, you’re inhaling. Some amount is going to be inadvertently inhaled. I wen’t through a cigar phase and pipe phase years ago. Both times I started developing a smoker’s cough even though I believed I wasn’t inhaling. It subsided both times after I gave it up. ---

He is an odd case; the few topics/times I came close to agreeing with him I still disliked him just the same. But cancer? I couldn’t wish something like that on my worse enemy. Prayers will have to ascend. ---

not all lung cancer is caused by smoking. Christopher Reeve’s wife died of lung cancer at 44 but never smoked anything. ---

He must’ve made bad choices and therefore he deserves anything and everything that happens to him. Sucks to be him. Yeah, and “thoughts and prayers”. Even if I had a cure I’d give him thoughts and prayers. ---

Rush Limbaugh is a hateful man, who has made his living by spreading bile. Also, fuck cancer. I hope that his situation causes more focus on the danger of cigars and helps cancer research in some way. Maybe he’ll bring some light into the world after all. ---

So it seems like yes, cigar and pipe smoking increases your risk of lung cancer, just not the tremendous increase in risk you expect from cigarette smoking. That is, unless he inhaled in which case in would be as bad or worse than cigarette smoking. ---
