What they need are kerosene space heaters. They provide heat and a cooking stove and it would be easy to supply the fuel. This decentralizes energy grids which takes away targets for Putin.

I was thinking the same thing, if kerosene could be imported in large quantities. I’ve got a kerosene heater for emergencies, and it throws a lot of heat for a portable heater.

it is my understanding that kerosene is basically (a cruder form of) diesel … so that should be widely available (no need for a dedicated supply chain)

It would be easy to ship a significant number of these heaters along with Co monitors. That way people aren’t guessing on their exposure.
I suspect this is already happening on some level. People will gravitate to the simplest/cheapest solution on their own. It’s just a matter of feeding the process.

You’d think multi-billionaire oligarchs could afford to wield some power. If I was that rich I would have engaged in Putin’s medical issues LONNNNGGGG before my fear of heights was realized.
I’d certainly have an army of well paid mercenaries to deal with Putin’s minions.

It’s a criminal organization run by the government with the 9th largest GDP. You can’t be partially committed. If you wanted out, you would have had to leave the country years ago.

So thanks to Putin’s Nuke threats, the US is deploying a second carrier group to Europe. Our newest, the Ford. This is the first time since the Cold War ended we’ve had 2 carrier groups deployed to Europe.

I think the author accurately assess the Russian plans for defeating Ukraine.
The West could still screw things up for Ukraine if support diminishes.

Back to the drone boats - has there been any damage assessment made public? What is the estimated payload of one of the boats? My best guest is that they are less than 20’ long. Could a shaped charge be effectively employed on this platform? (The downward slope in the front of what is, presumably, the payload makes me ask this.) What damage could they cause to a large ship, assuming a full load (a few hundred pounds?) of conventional explosives?

I spent some time yesterday trying without success to find news on this. All that can be confirmed so far is that the ship was not sunk. The damage isn’t visible from overhead views available to the public.

As a datapoint: i haven’t found an estimate of the size of the “small boat” that attacked the USS Cole in Aden in 2000, but it was estimated to have been carrying 400 to 600 pounds of explosive. It blew a 40-foot hole in the side of the larger vessel and killed seventeen sailors.

The things I’ve read have said that Putin is propping up the oligarchs, not the other way around. He gave them control of the industries that provided their fortunes. They have no real influence on him, because their money isn’t necessary for Putin’s control of the country. They owe their wealth to Putin; Putin does not owe any of his power to their wealth.
