Because Putin wont **go** to anyplace that would do that. I’ll bet if he landed in Ukraine or Poland they would.

I mean, Putin won’t go within a normal-sized table distance of his most loyal subordinates. The chances of him setting foot in a nation that’s a signatory of the ICC treaty are less than zero.

The verdict will also give any future Russian government some leverage with the west, as they can hand over Putin as a show of good faith and in exchange for a relaxation of sanctions.

That’s not the point … Pinochet went there, b/c he thought he would be safe (he went for a medical procedure) … and he wasn’t … due to the legalities of internional treaties (spain asking england formally to detain/extradite him … GB just cant pretend this formal request (being pushed through diplomatic channels) didn’t happen and look away).

the same RISK might apply to Putin … (possibly not, due to the factual forces of power) … but the point is **he cant run the risk of finding out**. And any country outside of russia today is a big risk.

… and just like they got Al Capone on marginal matters, they might get P. for these “marginal wrongdoings” (which seem to be easy to prove/indict)

so, PUTINS WORLD JUST GOT A LOT SMALLER TODAY.

good point - he now is a potential pawn (in the big scheme of geopolitics)

Personally I think he’s been following Hitler’s playbook pretty close. He’s either going to sneak away to an undisclosed location or kill himself. The pitchforks are coming and he knows it.

On a side note, I saw a video of him hugging a soldier. It was truly cringe worthy. It looked like Voldemort hugging Malfoy.

The Nazi’s had developed an upward firing line of mortars for the me163 rocket plane that would trigger from changes in light. They would fly under B-17’s and fire automatically when the bomber cast a shadow. It was too little too late in the war but it was a deadly weapon. They could cut a bomber’s wing off without the pilot having to time the shot.

It would be a nice addition to the drones.

I can’t imagine Putin being arrested for trial by the ICC, which seems kind of toothless since they can’t actually arrest anyone.

Theoretically though, say the head of a medium power state like Belgium was wanted for war crimes by the ICC. Would the UN be safe grounds for him? How about a meeting of the EU? Or NATO? (that’s probably a no) Any chance of being arrested at meetings for these held in signatory countries.?

Hard to guess. One such case is

> **[Charles Taylor’s 50-year sentence for ‘blood diamond’ war crimes upheld](https://www.thestar.com/news/world/2013/09/26/charles_taylors_50year_sentence_for_blood_diamond_war_crimes_upheld.html)**

But that was after he’d been forced from office, and it was an ad hoc special tribunal rather than the ICC - and neither Sierra Leone nor Liberia are exactly key players in international governance.

I just can’t imagine a country _not_ considering the arrest of their sitting head of state or government an act of war, ICC or no ICC. But if the arresting country is willing to face the consequences of war with a nuclear power, I say go for it.

Who’s going to issue the order? And they’d be nuking the country that Putin is being held in - probably at an undisclosed location. However I agree there’s almost a zero chance he will be arrested while head of state. But mostly because he will not travel to anywhere that would arrest him, so the speculation is moot.

I also don’t see Putin ceasing to be head of state until either natural or unnatural death. _Maybe_ imprisoned after a coup, but if so, I don’t think it would be long before he fell out of a window or drank the wrong tea.

again, its not so much the act of detaining him … its about the ABSTRACT risk of being detained … that makes it impossible for him to travel to the… **123 countries** which have signed this agreement …

… and I am fairly sure many russian politicians/top brass will be on a similar “list of people of interest” pretty soon.

so, this ICC move is not **nothing** , it is relevant - if only narrowing down an option-space for russian leadership

Even then, there is a precedent:

> **[Cadaver Synod](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cadaver_Synod)**
>
> The Cadaver Synod (also called the Cadaver Trial; Latin: Synodus Horrenda) is the name commonly given to the ecclesiastical trial of Pope Formosus, who had been dead for about seven months, in the Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome during January 897. The trial was conducted by Pope Stephen VI, the successor to Formosus' successor, Pope Boniface VI. Stephen had Formosus' corpse exhumed and brought to the papal court for judgment. He accused Formosus of perjury, of having acceded to the papac

I’ll have to check the ICC statute … 😀

One thing with the Russian pilot getting a medal: It’ll encourage other pilots to try similar stunts in the future. While, this time, it worked out for the Russian pilot, usually it won’t. And so we’ll see the loss of some irreplaceable Russian fighters, for the cost of a few cheap unmanned American drones. I consider that a bargain.

Here’s an even better one, IMHO. (From Wikipedia: Oliver Cromwell’s head)

> [@](#):
>
> When King Charles II was recalled from exile, his new parliament, in January 1661, ordered the disinterment of the elder Cromwell’s body from Westminster Abbey, as well as those of John Bradshaw and Henry Ireton for a posthumous execution at Tyburn. The three bodies were left hanging “from morning till four in the afternoon” before being cut down and beheaded. The heads were then placed on 20-foot (6.1 m) poles and displayed on the roof of Westminster Hall (the location of the trial of Charles I ). Cromwell’s head remained there until at least 1684.

But I do think it unlike Putin will suffer any indignity like that. He is much too aware of the enemies he’s made.

Press on.
