It reminds me of that Far Side cartoon where the guy goes into the forest. It went something like this: “As usual, the forest was full of happy creatures, but today something seemed amiss.” And there’s about 50 animals of all types, lined up, smiling broadly at him. ---

Hmmm, I know its on he BBC website and all, but really, its much more likely the other way around, a stray dog is going to be hungry and nasty and would probably look upon a bunch of squirrels as a great gastronomic opportunity. How long would it take a bunch of squirrels to take a dog down and eviscerate it ? Certainly not before any observers had intervened, which is what is stated in the article. Sorry, don’t believe it.
