I figured there must be a thread on this somewhere… so forgive me if I’m duplicating (and lock if necessary) but I can’t find it.

Anyway, latest news is that the American and British cargo planes carrying unmanned rescue vehicles have arrived. I haven’t heard much about the capability of the British vehicle, but the American one claims to be able to cut through steel cables.

It looks like the story of what is keeping it down there is changing now…

> Although initial reports said the propeller of the sub, an AS-28, became stuck on some fishing nets or cable, Interfax later reported the sub was fitted with a coastal observation aerial, held to the ocean floor by at least one anchor.
>
> The apparatus is keeping the sub from rising, and Interfax said the anchors were to be blown up. An earlier plan to cut the antenna and anchors apparently was abandoned. It was unclear whether a fishing net or cable was also involved.

I can’t really picture what exactly they’re talking about… the sub is stuck because it can’t get loose of an anchor? Hopefully once one of the robotic subs gets down there they can figure out what’s going on, and do something about it.

Here’s the latest CNN [story](http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/europe/08/06/russia.sea/index.html)

As of 4 a.m. ET the Russians are saying the crew has about 24 hours of oxygen left (that number has been bouncing around, but obviously time is of the essence).

Let’s hope for the best…

Again? Didn’t this happen just a few years ago with the Kursk? These Ruskies need to get their subs straightened out.

> PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, Russia - Seven crew members aboard a Russian mini-submarine trapped for three days beneath the Pacific Ocean were pulled to safety Sunday after a British remote-controlled vehicle cut away the undersea cables that had snarled it, Russian naval officials said.

Great job from the UK team!

So why the Russians had no rescue sub right there?

Becouse the Priz submersible is their rescue vehicle itself! :smack:

That’s the key…asking for help immediately! The final threads of the Iron Curtain have fallen.

Welcome back to the daylight, guys!

Yes, with the Kursk inciedent they delayed asking for help then cynically lied about the incident. But more recently [Russia learns lessons of Kursk disaster](http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/3194257.stm)

So how does a sub get tangled up in a fishing net to begin with? Ivylad was a sonar tech in the Navy and ain’t no way in hell a fishing net was going to stop one of those babies.

It was a small rescue sub, not a war vessel.

Welcome back to the world of air and sunshine, guys.

I hate to highjack, but the “final threads of the iron curtain” are nowhere even close to falling. In fact, Putin seems to be trying to reweave the thing out of whole fabric and put it right back in place.
