There is a plan to build a replica of the Titanic (although the Wikipedia article suggests that it may not ever be finished).

> The Titanic II will have all the antiquated amenities of its doomed predecessor — minus that sinking feeling.
> Eccentric Australian billionaire Clive Palmer revealed that his new mega ship will feature the same cramped conditions in third-class as the original Titanic that sunk in 1912.

There have apparently been a few other such proposals over the years as well.

A few years ago, The Asylum put out a movie about such a plan. Naturally, (The Asylum being what it is), the ship sank.

I think that such a thing would be in poor taste–it’s basically capitalizing on avoidable deaths.

If such a ship was actually built, and assuming that you could afford to sail on it, would you? If not, why?

Absolutely yes.
I bet the safety features will be obsessively thoroughly taken care of. Super safe. No sarcasm.

Heck yeah! It’d be fun as anything! I hope period costumes are encouraged!

[Previous thread](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=650115). There has also been a [documentary](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titanic_II_%28film%29) on the subject; personally I hate the sea and everything in it so I wouldn’t go anywhere near.

I said “no, tempting fate”, on the basis of assuming there won’t be enough lifeboats.

No, seems a waste of time/money.

What would be the point? To experience cabin experience, or being waited on? That could be done in a hotel without the risk of seasickness.

It seems a poorly thought out venture.

Totally! And I’d be in period dress the whole time and they’d have to pry my selfie-taking ass out of the bow and I’d run around quoting lines from the movie until my family whacked me over the head with a fireplace poker. 😃

But I’m the girl who loves Renaissance Fairs and Living History museums. It’s the chance to play Dress Up in the actual historical environment that attracts me.

I voted no because for me to be on water in a boat; the boat must have sails.

There’ll probably be \*far \*more than enough lifeboats.

No, because [even on _Doctor Who_, a ship named Titanic](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voyage_of_the_Damned_%28Doctor_Who%29) didn’t end well.

BTW, my grandmother, who was born in 1910, \*\*\*hated \*\*\*the movie. Her movie review was, “The characters were ridiculous and I couldn’t wait for the boat to sink.”

Actually, it was, by today’s standards, a pretty ugly ship. I’d choose to sail on a sexy newer one.

Sure, I’m not worried about an iceberg this time around.

But there are still iceberg-sized meteors out there. Just saying.

I’m kinda with you. Sailing on a replica Titanic would be kinda cool, but if you want to revive the old ocean liner (note: not cruise ship) experience I think you can do better by not going back quite so far. A transatlantic trip on the QE2 would have been fun; missed my chance on that but the QM2 is on the route now.

And sailing with sails? Been there, done that.

Modern military submarines have sails…

Well, that part would be fun. I LOVE the clothing from that era, and LOVE corsets and big hats. I’ve got the hair for those big Gibson-girl pompadours, too.

But the notion of being on a floating petri dish of norovirus doesn’t excite me.

I voted no, combination or other. I have no sense of direction, so I’d likely spend the entire voyage wandering around and never even finding my cabin. I get queasy on a boat still tied to the dock. I swim like a rock. And I’ve always thought a cruise would be borrrrrrrrrrrrrring. Give me a horse, any day.

You don’t have my category - Yes _but_ :
It needs to be fully compliant with all US health and safety regulations. [I am especially concerned with the shitter:steerage passenger proportions. Also physical cleanliness, as in showers:steerage passenger proportions.]

Must have adequate navigational and warning systems - we do not want to introduce ourselves to mr iceberg the hard way.

and must be able to afford first class passage for mrAru and self - being physically handicapped I can not deal with steerage and perhaps not second class. Which would also allow for one of those spiffy vintage wheelchairs if we are also going in costume.

I’ll bring a sketch pad and charcoal pencils if Kate Winslet will take her clothes off for me.
